Agniveers, young soldiers serving under the Agnipath scheme are at the heart of a transformative policy push designed to smooth their transition from military to civilian life.

These initiatives are a response to the unique challenges faced by Agniveers transitioning from disciplined military life into civilian roles. Unlike traditional long-term armed forces recruitment, the Agnipath scheme offers only a short-term engagement, making career planning post-service crucial. Recognising this, multiple government policies, corporate commitments, and skill-building programs have emerged to ensure that Agniveers are absorbed into critical sectors ranging from state police forces and central armed forces to corporate enterprises and the merchant navy.

Together, these 31 initiatives mark a strategic shift in how India approaches post-service welfare, positioning disciplined and trained youth as valuable contributors to national development beyond the armed forces.

1.     Indian Army and Indian Railways Launch Framework to Boost Post-Retirement Jobs for Agniveers

The Indian Army and the Indian Railways have launched a “Framework of Cooperation” aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for retiring Agniveers. The initiative is intended to facilitate their transition into railway employment through streamlined recruitment processes, targeted vacancy notifications, and skill-based role matching.

According to the description of the initiative, the framework focuses on improving access to post-retirement job opportunities by aligning available roles within the railways with the skills acquired by Agniveers during their service.

2.     Delhi Government Approves 20% Quota in Constable Posts for Ex-Agniveers in Delhi Police

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, V. K. Saxena, has approved an amendment to the Delhi Police (Appointment and Recruitment) Rules, 1980 to reserve 20 percent of male constable (executive) posts in the Delhi Police for former Agniveers.

Under the approved provisions, former Agniveers will be eligible for the reserved quota in direct recruitment to male constable positions. The policy includes age relaxation for ex-Agniveers, allowing an additional three years on the prescribed upper age limit, and up to five years of relaxation for members of the first Agnipath batch.

The new rules also exempt eligible candidates from the Physical Efficiency Test, a requirement in the standard recruitment process for constables.

According to official figures reported in connection with the decision, the total sanctioned strength of male constables in the Delhi Police through direct recruitment stands at 42,451 posts.

3.     Centre Notifies 50% Reservation for Ex-Agniveers in BSF Constable Recruitment

The Central government has issued a new notification granting 50 percent reservation to former Agniveers in direct recruitment to constable-level posts in the Border Security Force (BSF).

According to the latest notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 50 percent of seats in BSF constable direct recruitment will now be reserved for Ex-Agniveers. Earlier, former Agniveers were entitled to 10 percent reservation. Under the revised provision, half of the total seats each year will be allocated to experienced former Agniveers.

In addition, 10 percent of seats will remain reserved for Ex-Servicemen, and 3 percent will be reserved for adjustment of BSF combatised constables (tradesmen). The notification also provides age relaxation for former Agniveers applying for BSF constable posts. While the general age limit for candidates is 18 to 23 years, former Agniveers will receive an additional five-year relaxation for the first batch and three years for subsequent batches.

Former Agniveers will also be exempted from the Physical Standard Test (PST) and the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), and will not be required to undergo physical testing during recruitment.

After completion of four years of service under the Agnipath scheme, Agniveers are eligible for reservation in the BSF and other Central Armed Police Forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). They are also given preference in state police recruitment and private sector employment.

4.     Haryana Government Grants Age Relaxation for Ex-Agniveers in Direct Recruitment

The Government of Haryana has announced age relaxation measures for former Agniveers domiciled in the state who are seeking employment through direct recruitment.

Under the new decision, members of the first batch of Agniveers – expected to complete their four-year service in 2026-27 – will receive a five-year relaxation in the upper age limit for direct recruitment after retirement. Other former Agniveers will be eligible for a three-year age relaxation when applying for state government jobs and other recruitments.

The age relaxation policy is part of broader efforts by the state government to support Agniveers as they transition from military service to civilian employment.

5.     Uttarakhand Launches Free Training Programme for Agniveer Aspirants

The Government of Uttarakhand has announced a free pre-recruitment training programme for young men and women aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces as Agniveers. The initiative has been approved by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

According to officials, the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare has prepared a Standard Operating Procedure to implement the scheme. Training sessions will be conducted across all 13 districts of Uttarakhand to ensure access for candidates from remote and rural areas.

The programme will focus on physical fitness, preparation for the written examination, and personality development to help candidates meet the standards required in the Agniveer recruitment process.

Under the eligibility criteria, participants must be natives or permanent residents of Uttarakhand, or currently studying or working in an institution within the state. Applicants must have passed the high school examination with a minimum of 45 percent overall marks and at least 33 percent in each subject. The minimum age requirement for enrolment is 16 years.

6.     12 Rashtriya Rifles Conducts Physical Training and Pre-Medical Camp for Agniveer and TA Aspirants

The 12 Rashtriya Rifles organised a physical training and pre-medical examination camp for candidates aspiring to join the Armed Forces as Agniveers and in the Territorial Army at Banihal.

According to a statement issued in this regard, the camp was conducted as part of continued efforts to motivate and prepare local youth for recruitment. The training focused on improving stamina, endurance and discipline through structured physical exercises. Participants were also provided guidance on medical standards and health awareness.

A total of 35 candidates preparing for Territorial Army recruitment and 56 candidates aspiring for Agniveer recruitment took part in the camp. The candidates were briefed on the selection process and provided tips for mental preparedness.

The statement noted that the initiative witnessed significant participation from youth in the region. It stated that the efforts by 12 Rashtriya Rifles aimed at guiding aspirants towards a career in the Army while promoting fitness, confidence and national pride among young participants.

7.     Chandigarh Administration Approves 10% Job Reservation and Increased Compensation for Agniveers and Armed Forces Families

The Chandigarh Administration has approved a 10 percent reservation in government jobs for Agniveers who have completed their service. The decision was taken following recommendations from the Zila Sainik Board to improve post-service employment opportunities.

The reservation will apply to direct recruitment to Group B and Group C posts under the Union Territory administration. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Zila Sainik Board chaired by Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner-cum-President of the board.

8.     Sikkim Announces 20% Reservation for Agniveer Jawans in State Police

The Government of Sikkim has announced 20 percent reservation for Agniveer jawans in recruitment to the state police.

The announcement was made at an event in the state by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. He stated that the state government would provide a 10-year age relaxation while recruiting former army personnel in various categories within the state police force.

The Chief Minister also announced that the state government would allot shops to retired army personnel who wish to engage in business activities.

9.  Haryana Government Announces 20% Reservation for Agniveers in State Police Recruitment

The Nayab Singh Saini-led Government of Haryana has announced that former Agniveers will receive 20 percent reservation in recruitment to the Haryana Police.

Chief Minister Saini made the announcement after chairing a review meeting in Panchkula, stating that the policy is intended to secure post-service employment for individuals who have completed their tenure under the Agnipath scheme. Under the state’s existing provisions, a 10 percent reservation had previously been in place for Agniveers in recruitment for constables, forest guards and jail wardens.

The government plans to create a dedicated online portal for Agniveers, allowing them to register for job opportunities. Once registered, candidates will be given preference in recruitment on the basis of educational qualification, according to the official statement.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that 2,893 Agniveers from Haryana were recruited into the Army, Navy and Air Force in 2023-24, while 2,227 were recruited in 2022-23.

BrahMos Aerospace has announced reservation of employment for Agniveers under the Agnipath Scheme, becoming the first entity across private companies, Public Sector Undertakings and Defence Public Sector Undertakings to introduce such a measure.

Under the initiative, at least 15 percent of technical vacancies within BrahMos Aerospace will be filled by Agniveers. In addition, 50 percent of vacancies in administrative and security roles, including outsourced functions, will be reserved for Agniveers. The management has also planned to integrate Agniveers into extended employment opportunities beyond regular employment, including outsourcing contracts, to support their transition into civilian careers.

The initiative by BrahMos Aerospace aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and is aimed at promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing while providing employment opportunities to trained former military personnel.

11.  Krystal Integrated Services Expresses Interest in Hiring Agniveers After Military Tenure

Krystal Integrated Services has announced its intent to hire Agniveers following the completion of their short-term engagement with the Indian armed forces.

According to Sanjay Dighe, Chief Executive of Krystal Integrated Services, the skills and training acquired by Agniveers during military service make them suitable candidates for high-remuneration roles in the private sector. He stated that companies such as Krystal can act as a bridge between departing Agniveers and corporate employment, particularly in roles related to safeguarding valuable assets.

Dighe said there is significant demand for such trained personnel and indicated that Agniveers transitioning into the private sector would be gainfully employed without delay.

In a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office, Sharma said the move will provide Agniveers – youths who have served under the Agnipath scheme – with an opportunity to work in the state after completing their military service. He described the reservation provision as a measure for those “who protect the country’s borders with a sense of dedication and patriotism.”

Speaking at the event, Yadav said the reservation provision aligns with the vision articulated by Narendra Modi to support Agniveer personnel after their service under the Agnipath scheme. He said the state decision will apply to recruitment in the Madhya Pradesh Police as well as in state‐level armed forces.

The announcement was made at the state assembly premises, highlighting the state’s intention to provide employment opportunities to personnel trained under the Agnipath scheme, which recruits young soldiers for a four-year tenure in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Majhi’s announcement was made alongside the presentation of the Odisha government’s ₹2.65 lakh crore budget for the 2024‑25 fiscal year. He said the reservation and age‑relaxation provisions will apply to direct recruitment into uniformed roles, including police and other designated services, and aim to facilitate employment opportunities for former Agniveers.

Under the new provisions, eligible Agniveers will receive a 10 percent quota when applying for uniform service positions. In addition, the upper age limit for their eligibility will be relaxed by five years beyond the prescribed limit for these posts.

17.  Uttarakhand Announces Job Reservation for Agniveers, Increases Martyrs’ Ex-Gratia

In addition to the job reservation, CM Dhami announced that the ex gratia for martyrs’ families would be increased from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, with benefits extended beyond district-level offices to cover families more broadly. The reservation includes age relaxations of five years for the first batch of ex-Agniveers and three years for subsequent batches. Additionally, candidates will be exempt from the Physical Efficiency Test.

26.  Anand Mahindra Welcomes Opportunity to Employ Agniveers

Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, said he welcomes the opportunity to recruit Agniveers – personnel recruited under the Centre’s Agnipath scheme – in corporate roles.

In a message on social media, Mahindra said he was saddened by the violence surrounding the scheme but reaffirmed his view that the discipline and skills acquired by Agniveers make them highly employable. He said the Mahindra Group “welcomes the opportunity to recruit such trained, capable young people.”

Responding to a question about the kinds of roles Agniveers might fill, Mahindra said there is significant potential for their employment across the corporate sector. He highlighted their leadership, teamwork and physical training as qualities that could contribute to operations, administration and supply chain management in industry.

At the time, protests against the Agnipath recruitment scheme were ongoing in several states. Under the scheme, around 25% of recruits are retained for longer‑term service, while the remainder retire after four years without gratuity or pension benefits.

27.  Tata Sons Chairman Commits to Hire Agniveers, Says Agnipath Scheme Offers Opportunity for Youth and Industry

N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, publicly backed the Indian government’s Agnipath military recruitment scheme, describing it as a significant opportunity for young people and industry. He said the policy will not only allow youth to serve in the nation’s defence forces but also create a pool of disciplined and trained individuals available for employment across the private sector, including within the Tata Group.

Chandrasekaran said the Tata Group recognizes the potential of Agniveers – recruits under the Agnipath scheme – and welcomes the prospect of engaging them in corporate roles in the future. His remarks aligned with comments from other industry leaders, including Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra and executives from RPG Enterprises, Biocon Ltd, and Apollo Hospitals Group, who have also expressed support for the scheme and highlighted the value of training and discipline Agniveers acquire during service.

28.  Rama Prasad Goenka Group Chairman Commits to Hire Agniveers Following Anand Mahindra’s Offer

29.  Shipping Ministry Announces Six Service Avenues in Merchant Navy for Agniveers

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has declared six service avenues in the Merchant Navy to support the transition of Agniveers after they complete their service with the Indian Navy.

According to an official statement, the initiative will allow Agniveers to acquire necessary training, leverage their naval experience, and obtain professional certification to join the global Merchant Navy.

The announced options include transitions from Indian Navy ratings to certified ratings in the Merchant Navy, from Indian Navy electrical ratings to certified electro‑technical ratings, from Indian Navy ratings to certified Class IV‑NCV CoC holders, and from electrical ratings to certified electro‑technical officers in the Merchant Navy. The scheme also includes transition pathways for cooks to become certified cooks in the Merchant Navy.

30.  Skill Development Ministry to Train Agniveers in Additional Skills for Job Roles

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has announced plans to train Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme in additional skills to prepare them for various job roles during and after their service.

According to the ministry, certain skills learned during military service will align directly with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF), and Agniveers will receive ‘Skill India’ certification while in service. The initiative will involve collaboration between Skill India, MSDE, and various wings of the armed forces to provide supplementary training that complements on‑the‑job experience.

MSDE stated it will work with organisations including the Directorate General of Training, the National Skill Development Corporation, sector skill councils, and entrepreneurship institutes to ensure Agniveers obtain relevant skill certifications tied to their service roles.

31.  Agnipath Yojana Introduces Short-Term Armed Forces Recruitment for Youth

The Agnipath Yojana, launched by the central government, allows youth to serve in the armed forces for a four-year tenure as “Agniveers.”

Under the scheme, recruits receive a monthly salary, a risk allowance, and a one-time Seva Nidhi payout of Rs 11.71 lakh upon completion of service. Only up to 25% of Agniveers may be retained for longer-term regular service based on performance. The scheme does not provide pension or gratuity benefits.

The period between 2022 and 2026 has witnessed a comprehensive restructuring of post-service welfare for Agniveers, spanning central and state government policies, corporate commitments, and private sector partnerships. The initiatives combine reservations, age relaxations, skill development, financial packages, and corporate employment guarantees, establishing an ecosystem that ensures career stability, social recognition, and economic empowerment for India’s youth completing military service.

The structured approach across multiple domains-state police, central forces, railways, aviation, merchant navy, and corporate sectors-demonstrates a deliberate and strategic effort to integrate disciplined, skilled veterans into the broader workforce. The emphasis on education, skill certification, and entrepreneurial support ensures that Agniveers are not only absorbed into jobs but are equipped for long-term growth, leadership, and financial independence.

These welfare initiatives collectively reaffirm India’s commitment to the youth serving in its armed forces under short-term schemes, transforming their service experience into tangible post-retirement opportunities. By bridging the military-civilian transition with clarity, stability, and dignity, these measures shows the government and industry’s recognition of Agniveers as vital contributors to national security and development.
