Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Feb 22, flagged off India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor in Meerut, marking the inauguration of the full Delhi-Meerut stretch along with the Meerut Metro line between Meerut South and Modipuram. The projects, valued at approximately Rs 12,930 crore, were dedicated to the nation as part of the Centre’s push for modern transport infrastructure.
Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the launch symbolised the vision of “Viksit UP, Viksit Bharat” and highlighted the role of coordinated governance between the Centre and the state. He asserted that development projects undertaken under BJP governments do not suffer delays, contrasting them with earlier administrations which he alleged were marked by inefficiency and corruption.
Development Model and Political Attack
Modi said that infrastructure expansion reflects the BJP’s “double-engine government” model, where cooperation between state and central governments accelerates development. He claimed that earlier governments, including the Indian National Congress and Samajwadi Party, failed to deliver such projects and were instead associated with scams.
He challenged opposition parties to contest elections on the basis of development, stating that his government’s primary focus remains national progress and public welfare.
Boost to Meerut Connectivity
Highlighting the significance of the project, the Prime Minister said the Namo Bharat corridor would greatly improve connectivity between Meerut and Delhi, reducing travel time and making daily commuting easier for students and professionals.
He noted that India’s metro network has expanded significantly in recent years and now covers nearly 25 cities. During the visit, Modi interacted with students and passengers, saying many expressed amazement at the pace of development.
The Prime Minister also credited improved law and order conditions for enabling economic and infrastructure growth in Uttar Pradesh.
Focus on Women Empowerment
Modi emphasised that the Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro systems would promote women’s empowerment, stating that several operational and administrative roles would be assigned to women.
He described the initiative as a step toward strengthening “Nari Shakti” by creating employment opportunities and ensuring safer and more inclusive public transport.
India’s Growing Global Standing
The Prime Minister said India is receiving growing global recognition and that developed nations are increasingly interested in partnering with the country for economic growth and technological cooperation.
He added that international collaborations would benefit domestic industries, particularly small and medium enterprises.
Reference to AI Summit
Referring to the recently held India AI Impact Summit, Modi said the event demonstrated India’s technological capabilities and global leadership in artificial intelligence.
He stressed that the summit was organised for national development and was not linked to any political party.
Sharp Criticism of Congress
In a strongly worded attack, Modi accused Congress leaders of damaging India’s image through what he described as negative politics. He alleged that Congress leaders and their supporters frequently target him personally and insult national institutions.
The Prime Minister claimed that Congress had become a burden on the country and said that political leadership requires sustained grassroots work rather than rhetoric.
He also urged the media not to defend Congress in the name of opposition politics, reiterating that development remains the government’s only agenda.
