The concept of community living in apartment settings emphasises shared responsibilities and communal celebrations. Historically, many residents may have limited their festivities to national festivals such as Independence Day and Republic Day. This trend reflects a broader cultural phenomenon where certain communities, particularly Hindus, feel hesitant to publicly celebrate their festivals and cultural events, possibly due to the lingering impacts of colonialism and the complexities introduced by the caste system. Over time, there has been a notable shift. Hindus are gradually coming together to embrace their cultural heritage and celebrate festivals openly, marking a resurgence in communal pride and solidarity. This movement, encapsulated in events like Hindu Samajotsava, symbolises a collective effort to transcend divisions and foster a sense of unity. By participating in celebrations like this, highlight the importance of the responsibilities of each member in understanding the shared values such as social harmony, environmental protection, family enlightenment, self-reliant living, and a sense of civic duties. This particular Utsav made every resident not only honour their cultural roots but also cultivate an inclusive environment where everyone can take part in the joy of collective celebrations. This evolving narrative of community and unity strengthens ties among diverse groups within society, allowing for a richer, more vibrant communal life to live peacefully in Bharat.I reside in the Mantri Serenity apartment, Bengaluru, where diverse people with various religions and ideological inclinations live. Nonetheless, the majority Hindu group decided to celebrate Hindu Samajotsava uniquely.
We celebrated Hindu Samajotsava, combining it with the Republic Day celebration, making it a day-long programme. After the flag unfurling ceremony, all residents gathered at the designated place to go on a Shobhayatra in the evening. The intention was to gather all Bharatiyas under one umbrella to honour Maa Bharati and promote a sense of community. The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with devotion as the procession commenced at our apartment’s Ganesha temple. Fifty kalashas, beautifully decorated according to the Hindu Shastra and adorned with Hindu flags, created a stunning visual display. At the heart of the gathering was a photo of Maa Bharati, symbolising strength and unity among the residents. Our apartment purohit led the Kalasha poojan with heartfelt dedication, chanting Vedic mantras that resonated through the air. Each resident, filled with reverence, approached to apply vermilion to Maa Bharati, symbolising our collective prayers for her blessings. We sought strength and valour to navigate the complexities of our ever-changing society, reinforcing our commitment to support one another.A Shobhayatra of Faith, Patriotism, and Collective ResolveAs we completed our rituals, a palpable sense of community spirit emerged, uniting residents from diverse backgrounds in a shared purpose. With prayers and offerings made, we prepared to begin the Shobhayatra, a procession that not only celebrated our traditions but also embodied the values of togetherness and resilience. The journey ahead promised a day filled with joy, cultural expression, and a deeper connection to our heritage, as we walked shoulder to shoulder, embracing the essence of our community.
Featuring a chariot carrying a representation of Bharat Mata, which was pulled by us, followed the children’s tableau. Children dressed as Swami Vivekananda, Shankaracharya, brave soldiers, Rani Abbakka, and many more have tried to represent the classic vignettes of our history, followed by women dressed in orange sarees carrying kalashas, drum beating by residents, some carrying placards with key themes including taking control on purpose through action, along with Jayaghoshas (victory slogans) resonated the apartment air. Patriotic songs were sung throughout the procession. The air was filled with the sounds of Bhakti Geet and the uplifting chants of Jayaghoshas, particularly from the children, who sang with a spirit of valour and joy.
The Shobhayatra went round the apartment covering more than a kilometer and made its way to the flag post, where the national flag proudly fluttered, bearing the message, “Keep your head held high.”After the lowering of flag, all residents shared their reflections on the historical journey of Bharat—celebrating its triumphs and acknowledging its trials—we collectively reaffirmed our commitment to unity. Residents from all walks of life and all age groups joined the Yatra with enthusiasm. The event concluded with a solemn pledge to stand together as Bharatiyas, setting aside cultural differences, religious beliefs, and ideological divides, and to work tirelessly for the welfare of the nation, particularly in the face of the current precarious geopolitical climate. Combining Hindu Samajotsava with Republic Day was not just a celebration of past achievements, but a clarion call for unity and cooperation in building a better future for all Hindus. After having divine Prasadam, we disbursed with the confidence that our Hindu brothers will support us in distress.
