Countdown commences for the Bangladesh national elections. The country witnessed an embroiling phase of massive political instability, law & order chaos and security crisis since the take over of the country’s administration by the interim government led by its Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. The minorities were inhumanely targeted and attacked including the minority Hindu community. A deep economic crisis entangled the country with soaring inflation and cost of living hiccups. The textile and other industries were shut leaving the livelihood of the common people at crossroads.
On the other hand, radical Islamic elements drastically spiked across the country who triggered communal hatred and violence to fulfill their illicit political or religious motives. The political and security situation is still boiling in Bangladesh and stability is yet a distant dream. Amidst this precarious scenario, the country is set to go for polls on February 12. However, while there is less than 72 hours for the Bangladesh polls, Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP) and Jamaat, key stakeholders in the elections are at loggerheads. They have clashed severely leading to severe injury of 40 people, thus reflecting the chaotic security scenario, lingering in the country.
Cause of the violence
While there is less than three days left for the high-voltage and much anticipated Bangladesh polls that is set to determine the political and economic course of the country, violence and security crisis have not receded or come under the control of the government. Lately, the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami have severely clashed during the election campaign. The clashes and violence erupted after the BNP workers accused Jamaat of distributing the cash to appease the voters. BNP began to protest against the Jamaat for alleged distribution of cash.
To counter the protests of the BNP, Jamaat began to mobilize its workers to protest against the BNP. This mobilisation of workers and protests later on turned into violent confrontation leaving 40 people severely injured. This episode is deemed as the most violent face-off in the ongoing election campaigning. Also, since the election campaigning commenced, over the past six weeks more than 40 people have been severely injured, mirroring the deep tensions prevailing in the political landscape of Bangladesh. As the poll nears, the intensity of tensions and violence are spiking with no concrete action from the Yunus government.
Bangladesh polls as political and communal tensions prevail
The Bangladesh polls are scheduled for February 12. The high-intensity election witnesses direct confrontation between the Bangladesh National Party(BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami. The elections are keenly observed across the globe including India, as this is the maiden election post the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina regime in August 2024 by a violent student uprising. Since then, the interim regime under Muhammad Yunus has come under severe scrutiny as political chaos, attacks on the minority community and other radical elements are rising in the country without any check. There is also an increasing nexus between Dhaka and Pakistan thus, posing a major security challenge in the larger geopolitical arena.
The upcoming elections are thus set to determine the political fate of Bangladesh which has severely derailed in its developmental momentum under the Yunus regime. With the Awami League, the political party of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina being barred from contesting the elections, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami led coalition are the key stakeholders. The elections are thus determined as the most consequential polls since decades, where nearly 127 million voters are set to cast their franchise on February 12.
Political analysts reiterate that the prevailing or indeed escalating political tensions and conflict scenario in Bangladesh could erode public confidence in the electoral process. Thus, Bangladesh elections are set to determine the political and economic course of the country, which is hoping for a revival from the crisis-hit phase. Moreover, the protection of minority rights and lives, especially those of the Hindu community, is pivotal as the vulnerable Hindu population is irrationally attacked by the radical mobs. Political experts are also sceptical about the transparency and accountability in the Bangladesh polls, as the nature of polls, election results and its domestic & geopolitical repercussions are awaited.
