Thiruvananthapuram: Twenty20, a socio-political grouping centred in Ernakulam district, particularly in the Christian-dominated belt, has decided to become part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Kerala. The decision was announced after a meeting between Twenty20 President Sabu Jacob and BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar at the party’s headquarters. Sabu Jacob is scheduled to formally join the NDA at a public function to be attended by the Prime Minister on Friday.
Announcing the development, Rajeev Chandrasekhar described the alliance as a “happy and timely decision” that aligns with the broader slogan and political vision raised by the BJP. He said the NDA was attempting to transform Kerala’s political culture, moving away from constant controversies and confrontations towards a development-oriented and stable politics.
Chandrasekhar also highlighted Sabu Jacob’s background as an entrepreneur, noting that he has built successful enterprises and created large-scale employment. “That is precisely the vision of a developed Kerala that the BJP is putting forward,” he said. According to him, the entry of a person with proven managerial and development credentials would strengthen the NDA’s claim that governance and growth should take precedence over ideological rigidity.
Sabu Jacob, in his response, said that joining the NDA was a carefully thought-out and deliberate decision. He explained that he had entered politics after witnessing what he described as the destructive governance practices of both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). “The NDA is able to accommodate diverse groups and viewpoints. No one should look down on the BJP,” he said, adding that political prejudices must give way to practical governance and development needs.

With Twenty20 becoming part of the NDA, the long-standing two-front contest in Ernakulam district is expected to give way to a strong triangular political battle. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Twenty20 had contested independently in eight constituencies in the district and secured around 15.30 per cent of the vote share. The BJP’s average vote share in the district has been in the range of 10 to 12 per cent. With the merger of these two vote banks, NDA leaders believe their combined strength could rise to 25 to 30 per cent in several constituencies.
This shift is expected to transform the BJP from a marginal third force into a decisive political player in Ernakulam district, with the capacity either to win seats directly or to determine the eventual winners. Political analysts point out that this new alignment significantly alters the arithmetic of several closely contested seats.
The alliance is widely seen as a major setback for the Congress Muslim League-led UDF. In constituencies such as Kunnathunadu and Perumbavoor, a significant section of Christian voters who traditionally supported the Congress, along with development-oriented neutral voters, had already shifted towards Twenty20 in recent years. With Twenty20 now firmly within the NDA, the likelihood of these voters returning to the UDF is expected to diminish sharply, consolidating the BJP’s position. At the same time, the concentration of anti-incumbency sentiment towards the NDA is also emerging as a challenge for the LDF. This could lead to a leakage of the Left’s core vote base, especially in regions such as Kizhakkambalam, where Twenty20 has a strong organisational presence. The alliance is expected to create significant political churn in constituencies like Kunnathunadu, Kothamangalam, Perumbavoor, and within the limits of the Kochi Corporation.
There is a strong possibility that the NDA could emerge as either the first or second force in Kunnathunadu, the headquarters of Twenty20. The organisation also maintains a solid base in Kothamangalam and Perumbavoor. Analysts note that the combination of the BJP’s growing influence among urban voters in Kochi and Twenty20’s reputation for development-focused local governance could prove electorally advantageous. Recent local body election results further underline this trend. The BJP has retained or captured power in panchayats such as Aikaranad, Kizhakkambalam, Thiruvaniyoor, and Poothrikka. The party’s victory in the Tripunithura municipality is also seen as a significant indicator of its expanding footprint in the district. The coming together of these two forces is expected to pose a serious challenge to both the LDF and UDF.
The alliance is also likely to have a long-term impact on Christian voting patterns, which have traditionally played a decisive role in Central Kerala politics. Twenty20 is expected to act as a safe bridge for Christian voters who have so far kept their distance from the BJP to enter the NDA fold. Sabu Jacob’s close relationships with church leaders are expected to strengthen the BJP’s outreach to the Christian community.
Finally, the convergence of positions taken by the BJP and Twenty20 on social issues such as love jihad, along with their shared emphasis on development, is likely to resonate among Christian voters. Sabu Jacob’s pragmatic argument that central assistance is essential for Kerala’s development is expected to become a key theme in the coming political debates.
