Mess in West Bengal: TMC’s Khela Hobe: How the ‘Messi Show’ exposed alleged cronyism & misrule under Mamata Govt

What was projected as a defining moment in Kolkata’s footballing legacy has instead become one of the most embarrassing and controversial episodes in West Bengal’s recent public life. The much-publicised Lionel Messi programme at Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) promoted as a grand celebration of football for the people of Bengal ended not with cheers and pride, but with chaos, vandalism, public anger, and explosive allegations of fraud and political favoritism.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya has slammed the incident as a symbol of “administrative collapse” under the Mamata Banerjee government, accusing it of dragging Bengal’s name into international disrepute. The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), West Bengal, has gone a step further, calling the episode a “Messi Scam” and launching street protests demanding accountability and resignations.

Kolkata is not just another city on the football map it is a city where the sport is an emotion, a tradition passed down generations. Against this backdrop, the announcement of Lionel Messi’s programme was sold as a historic moment. Fans were promised access, celebration, and a rare opportunity to witness a global football icon in the heart of a city that “lives and breathes the beautiful game.”

Tickets were sold at premium prices ranging between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000. Thousands of fans students, working professionals, families paid these steep amounts believing the government-backed event would be professionally managed.

What awaited them at Salt Lake Stadium, however, was not a festival of football but confusion, barricades, restricted entry, and a growing realisation that the event was never truly meant for them.

According to allegations, a programme advertised as a public celebration was quietly converted into an exclusive, closed-door affair. While ordinary ticket-holders were kept at bay, individuals allegedly close to the Trinamool Congress leadership were seen enjoying unrestricted access.

Those named include close relatives of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, associates of Abhishek Banerjee, senior minister Aroop Biswas, and members of the Biswas family. The optics, critics argue, were devastating: while thousands waited outside with tickets in hand, a select political circle enjoyed front-row privilege.

“This was not miscommunication; this was deliberate exclusion,” Amit Malviya alleged, calling it a betrayal of public trust and a mockery of Bengal’s football culture.

As the situation worsened, the scale of administrative failure became impossible to hide. There was poor coordination between organisers, security personnel, and stadium authorities. Clear instructions were missing. Entry gates were closed or rerouted without explanation. Fans were left standing for hours, uncertain whether the programme would even take place.

The ultimate humiliation came when Lionel Messi reportedly could not stay for the event due to the prevailing chaos and security concerns. For thousands who had gathered in hope, the news felt like a punch to the gut. Instead of celebration, frustration turned into rage.

As emotions boiled over, angry crowds entered the stadium premises. Chairs were vandalised, banners torn down, and scenes of disorder played out inside one of India’s largest sporting venues. BJP leaders have warned that the situation could easily have escalated into a major tragedy.

“By God’s grace, no lives were lost,” Amit Malviya stated, squarely blaming the state government for pushing citizens into a situation of serious risk through negligence and incompetence.

From Sandeshkhali to the Messi mess — Mamata Banerjee has brought international disrepute to Bengal.

The images of destruction from Salt Lake Stadium once a symbol of sporting pride now stand as visual testimony to a system that failed at every level.

In the aftermath, BJYM accused a TMC-sponsored event management agency of cheating football fans, alleging that false promises were made to sell expensive tickets without ensuring access or safety. Instead of a transparent inquiry, critics claim that an organiser is now being positioned as a convenient scapegoat, allowing political leadership to evade responsibility.

“Scams in Bengal now come wrapped in celebrity branding,” a BJYM leader remarked. “From recruitment frauds to this football farce, the pattern is the same no accountability at the top.”

Leaders have also questioned the political motivations behind the event, pointing to the controversial installation of a 70-foot statue of Lionel Messi prior to the programme. They allege that the international footballer was brought in primarily for political optics rather than sporting development or public engagement.

“What was the plan beyond photo opportunities?” asked a BJP spokesperson. “There was no respect for fans, no respect for the player, and no respect for public safety.”

Holding the state government directly responsible, the BJP has demanded the immediate resignation of Sports Minister Aroop Biswas. The party has accuses him of gross negligence, misuse of public resources, and playing with the emotions of ordinary citizens.

“Bringing an international icon, charging citizens exorbitant fees, mismanaging the event, and then washing your hands of responsibility is unacceptable,” Amit Malviya said.

The incident has inflicted deep damage on Kolkata’s global image. A city known worldwide for its football heritage is now being discussed for all the wrong reasons chaos, elitism, and administrative incompetence. “From Sandeshkhali to the Messi mess, Bengal is being embarrassed repeatedly,” Amit Malviya remarked. “Apologies cannot undo the damage.”
