Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav 2025: Honouring Subramania Bharati and celebrating India’s linguistic diversity

From December 4 to 11, 2025, schools across India will celebrate Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav, honouring Mahakavi Subramania Bharati and India’s linguistic heritage, with activities promoting multilingual learning, cultural pride, and unity in alignment with NEP 2020

From December 4 to 11, 2025, schools across India will come alive with the vibrant spirit of Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav, a festival dedicated to celebrating the nation’s rich linguistic heritage. Aligned with the transformative vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this festival honours the legacy of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, the revered Tamil poet, while promoting multilingual learning, cultural unity, and national integration under the inspiring theme, “Many Languages, One Emotion.”

Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav is held in commemoration of Subramania Bharati, a visionary poet, social reformer, and freedom fighter whose works transcended linguistic and cultural boundaries. Bharati’s poetry, imbued with themes of unity, freedom, and human dignity, continues to inspire generations. By celebrating his contributions, the festival underscores the power of language to unite diverse communities and evoke shared human emotions.

Aligned with the vision of NEP 2020, Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav 2025 will be celebrated in schools across the nation from 4th to 11th December 2025, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati.

Aligning with NEP 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 emphasises multilingualism as a cornerstone of education, recognising its role in preserving India’s linguistic diversity while fostering cognitive, cultural, and emotional growth. Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav brings this vision to life by providing students with opportunities to engage with multiple Indian languages, thereby promoting inclusivity, mutual respect, and a deeper appreciation for India’s cultural mosaic.

The festival resonates with the NEP’s three-language formula, encouraging students to explore and celebrate languages beyond their mother tongue. This approach not only enhances linguistic skills but also strengthens national integration by bridging regional and cultural divides.

“Many Languages, One Emotion”

The theme of Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav 2025, “Many Languages, One Emotion,” beautifully captures the essence of India’s linguistic diversity. Despite the multitude of languages spoken across the country, from Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali to Assamese, Kannada, and beyond, the universal emotions of love, unity, and pride bind all communities together. Through this theme, students are encouraged to explore how different languages express shared human experiences, fostering empathy, understanding, and connection among young learners.

Exciting activities across schools

Schools nationwide will host a variety of interactive and creative activities designed to spark enthusiasm for languages and deepen appreciation for India’s linguistic heritage. Highlights of the week-long festival include:

Language Tree Display & Language Heritage Wall (December 4)

Students will showcase the diversity of Indian languages through visual displays, celebrating the historical and cultural significance of each language.

Poetry Across Languages & Music Through Languages ( December 5)

Poetry recitals and musical performances in multiple languages will highlight the beauty of linguistic expression and creativity.

Festivals of Many Tongues & Voice of Language Podcast ( December 6)

Students will explore regional festivals and traditions while participating in digital podcasts to share their linguistic experiences.

Unity in Proverbs & Bhasha Mitra Collaboration (December 8)

Proverbs from different languages will be shared, reflecting universal wisdom, alongside collaborative activities connecting students across schools.

Bhasha Bandhu Letters & Story Chain in Multiple Languages ( December 9)

Letter-writing and storytelling exercises will encourage students to engage creatively in multiple languages.

Language Exploration Clubs (December 10)

Clubs will offer immersive sessions in Indian languages, including interactive storytelling, vocabulary challenges, and cultural discussions.

Interactive Language Fair (Bhasha Mela) & Language Theatre Showcase (December 11)

The festival will culminate in a grand language fair, featuring cultural performances, theatre showcases, and exhibitions celebrating India’s linguistic wealth. Additional initiatives will include translation challenges, calligraphy displays, virtual quizzes, and language learning apps, making the festival both educational and engaging for tech-savvy students.

Promoting cultural unity

Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav is more than just a celebration of languages—it is a movement to strengthen India’s unity in diversity. By embracing multiple languages, students learn to value different perspectives and traditions, breaking down linguistic barriers and building a shared national identity.

The festival creates an environment where every language is respected, every voice is heard, and every student experiences the joy of cultural exchange and empathy, echoing Subramania Bharati’s vision of a united, inclusive, and multilingual India.
