Dehradun Police arrested a Bangladeshi woman who had allegedly been residing in India for years using fake documents and a falsified Hindu identity. The action came as part of Operation Kalnemi, a district-wide campaign aimed at identifying individuals living under false names and forged Indian identity papers.

Police said the woman, identified as Babli Begum (28) of Gaibandha district, Bangladesh, was found living in the Patel Nagar area under the assumed identity of “Bhoomi Sharma.”

During interrogation, Begum confessed that she had illegally crossed the border into India during the COVID-19 pandemic. After moving across several locations, she reached Dehradun in 2021, and in 2022, married a local resident following which she obtained multiple forged Indian documents.

Officials recovered from her possession a fake Aadhaar card, Ayushman card, ration card, voter ID, and other Indian identity documents in the name of Bhoomi Sharma, along with an authentic Bangladeshi identity card confirming her real name.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections related to illegal stay and use of forged documents. Authorities said they are investigating the network that facilitated the creation of her fake identity and promised strict action against all involved.

In a related action, another suspected Bangladeshi national, Bobby Khatun (41) of Bogura district, was detained from Kalinda Vihar Phase-2. Officials said she admitted to entering India illegally in 2023 and had been living in Dehradun while working as a labourer. A photocopy of her Bangladeshi passport was recovered, and authorities said she will be deported as per procedure.

Last week, police had arrested Mamun Hasan, another Bangladeshi citizen illegally residing in Dehradun under the fake identity of “Sachin Chauhan.” Under the ongoing Operation Kalnemi, Dehradun Police have so far taken action against 17 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the district.

  • 8 have been sent to jail for using forged documents
  • 9 have been deported to Bangladesh

Officials say the drive will continue until all individuals staying illegally under false identities are identified and removed.
