Guwahati: Assam is celebrating the 403rd Birth Anniversary of Bir Lachit Borphukan, the great Ahom General who crushed the mighty Mughal army in the last ‘Battle of Saraighat’. ‘Lachit Divas’ is being observed across the state with pride to remember the great warrior of Assam who blocked the Mughal aggression permanently in the bank of mighty river Brahmaputra in 1671.
Various programs are being organised across the state to remember the great son of the soil who has been inspiring the people of Assam for the last 4 centuries. The Assam government is organising the Lachit Divas program in Teok in Lachit Maidam where the great warrior was cremated.
Remembering the bravery of the great general PM Narendra Modi wrote in his X handle,” On Lachit Diwas, we remember Lachit Borphukan, a symbol of courage, patriotism and true leadership. His heroism continues to inspire generations. He played a key role in safeguarding the exemplary culture of Assam.”
Lachit Borphukan’s historic win over the Mughal was not just a simple win in battle between two armies. The bravery of the Ahom General safeguard the history, culture and heritage of Assam and the entire Northeast region which the Mughal was never successful to conquer.
Paying tribute to the 17th century brave heart Home Minister Amit Shah wrote in his social media handles, “Tributes to one of the greatest warriors of our history, Ahom General Lachit Barphukan Ji, on his birth anniversary.
His unflinching patriotism, invincible valor, and unparalleled military leadership not only shielded Assam and the rest of our Northeast from the onslaught of the Mughals but also secured the region’s precious cultural heritage. His life will remain a lighthouse of inspiration for patriots forever.”
It should be mentioned that with a very brave, clever and patriotic but small army, Bir Lachit Borphukan with his exceptional leadership capability and courage defeated the huge Mughal army. With his unmatched war strategy General Lachit Borphukan compelled the Mughal army to fight the Battle of Saraighat in river Brahmaputra. Bir Lachit sensed that with his very small army it was tough to defeat the Mughal army unless they were forced for a naval war.
Lachit Birphukan constructed a huge rampart around Guwahati so that the Mughal army had to cross the river Brahmaputra to enter Guwahati. This was the moment when the brave and expert naval force of Lachit Borphukan crushed the mighty Mughal army and they never tried to return to Assam for another attack.
Remembering the valor of Bir Lachit Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in his social media, “The heroic story of the great Ahom general Lachit Barphukan is a source of pride and inspiration for every Indian. Your respect for the great hero is a reflection of your immense respect for the heritage and history of Assam. We will continue to work diligently to perpetuate the memory of the hero.”
Yet the valor of Bir Lachit Birphukan was never included in the history of India by the Congress governments until the BJP government in the centre and state decided to bring the patriotism of Lachit Borphukan to the people of the country. Hopefully the bravery and patriotism of the great son of Assam finds its due respect in the history of Bharat.
