Tamil Nadu: Villupuram DMK functionary accused of sexual assault; BJP, AIADMK slam police inaction

A fresh sexual assault complaint against a DMK functionary in Villupuram has intensified political backlash, with BJP and AIADMK accusing the ruling party of shielding offenders and failing to protect women in Tamil Nadu

Reports of sexual assault cases against women under the DMK government have become disturbingly routine, with several leaders allegedly targeting vulnerable women and exploiting them while seeking protection within a political and ecosystem widely accused of reluctance to take legal action.

In yet another incident, a ruling DMK functionary in Villupuram has been accused of sexual assault, heightening concerns that women’s safety remains deeply compromised, whether in schools, colleges, universities, workplaces, on the roads, and particularly when influential party functionaries of the DMK and its allies are involved.

A 35-year-old woman from a village near Vanur in Villupuram district, who earns her livelihood by selling flowers, has accused DMK functionary Baskaran of sexually assaulting her and then extending the abuse for months through video threats. Baskaran, from the same locality, is engaged in selling sand, gravel and other construction material. The woman had bought construction material from him for her new house and paid in cash, and since they lived in the same area, both were known to each other.

According to her statement, “Baskaran one day asked me, ‘Your husband is not with you and you are alone. I am a bachelor. Why don’t we live together?’ I refused to accept that offer. He also started harassing me at odd hours by sending messages and calling me to speak.”

She further said that on 8 June this year, he invited her to his home claiming he wanted to discuss “something very important.” Once she entered, “He took me to his car shed and forcefully had a sexual relation with me despite resistance. He took a video of the same and threatened me not to share this with anyone and said I should come whenever he calls. He told me, ‘I am a big man. None can touch me. Even if you complain to police, they won’t act on this.’ He has been sexually assaulting me for the last six months.”

The victim finally decided to put an end to his sexual tortures and, after gathering courage, approached the police with a complaint. Based on her complaint, the Kottakuppam Police have registered a case. However, he is yet to be arrested. Police said they are inquiring to ascertain the genuineness of her complaint with the victim, and if found true, he will be arrested.

Voicing his concern on this, TN BJP chief Nainar Nagendran said, “A woman has complained that she was sexually assaulted by a DMK functionary. The video of the victim will shock everyone. It shows the monstrous face of DMK men who have been in the habit of sexually assaulting hapless women in the State. It has become the order of the day that saying ‘DMK man’ itself is an identity card to commit sexual crimes. They think that as long as the DMK is in power, they can commit any crime and go scot-free using their proximity to the ruling dispensation. With this mindset, they go searching for hapless women and children for their sexual prowess. They also use double entendres. How can we expect dignity and honour for women from them? People should realise what would happen if power is given to such a gang?”

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on November 22, criticised the State government after a DMK union secretary in Villupuram district was accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a woman over a period of six months. Referring to media reports, the AIADMK leader said the accused had allegedly threatened the survivor and claimed he was “untouchable” due to his political connections. He said such incidents reflected a serious breakdown in law and order in the State and raised questions over the safety of women in Tamil Nadu.

EPS said individuals close to ministers and district-level functionaries were repeatedly facing allegations of criminal conduct, including sexual offences, while the ruling government had failed to act decisively. He said Chief Minister Stalin had remained a “silent spectator” even as complaints involving ruling party members continued to surface, referring to his role in handling the Home Portfolio, which oversees the police department.

The AIADMK general secretary urged the DMK government to take immediate, strict legal action against the accused and ensure the survivor receives complete protection. The Leader of the Opposition alleged that this exposes the failure of the “Stalin-model governance”, saying the regime had weakened law enforcement, particularly in cases involving ruling party workers. “How this puppet government, which fails to rein in party cadres from committing such heinous crimes, is going to save the State?” he asked.

In May 2025, an Arakkonam-based college student accused suspended DMK youth wing functionary Deivaseyal of rape and sexual harassment. She told media persons, “His job is to force 20-year-old girls to sleep with politicians, and he would bite me like a mad dog. He assaulted me on the way to college, injured me and broke my phone. And he would say, ‘If you complain, nothing will happen as the police will support me’. Because of him, I tried to take poison.”

In December 2024, on the Anna University campus, a girl student was sexually assaulted by DMK functionary Gnanasekaran. He allegedly told the victim to “cooperate with a ‘Sir’”, and police delayed arresting him because of his closeness to top leaders of the DMK government.

These are only a few instances showing how DMK men, using their clout in the government, allegedly indulge in sexual and other crimes boldly, without fear of the law.
