In a first of its kind of tough action, Assam government has instructed declared foreigners to leave Assam within 24 hours. Five illegal intruders from Bangladesh residing in Assam have been ordered to leave the state within 24 hours. The Bangladeshi nationals have been declared as illegal foreigners by the Foreigner’s Tribunal, invoking the Immigration Expulsion from Assam Act, 1950, which empowers the District Commissioner to expel detected foreigners within 10 days.
The District Commissioner of Sonitpur district in North Assam issued the expulsion notice on November 18 and asked five Bangladeshi nationals to leave Assam. The detected foreigners are Hanufa, Amjad Ali, Mariyam Nessa, Fatema, and Monowara, all residents of Dhobokata village under Jamugurihat police station.
The Foreigners Tribunal of Sonitpur district delivered its verdict on October 24, 2025, declaring all five individuals as foreigners in different cases.
In his expulsion order the District Commissioner stated that the presence of the declared foreigners in Assam/India is detrimental to all the interests of the general public and is a serious concern for the internal security of the country. The Bangladeshi nationals have been instructed to leave Assam via designated exit routes in Dhubri, Sribhumi and South Salmara-Mankachar district.
Ananda Kumar Das, District Commissioner of Sonitpur, who signed the expulsion order, warned the foreign nationals that failure to comply with the orders from competent authorities would invite legal action to remove them from the territory of Assam under the Immigration Expulsion from Assam Act, 1950.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 9 said that after the new SoP on Immigrants Expulsion from Assam Act, 1950, the state government will expedite the deportation process. CM Sarma said, “ we have pushbacked 30,126 foreigners so far. But after adoption of the new SoP the numbers will increase significantly.” The CM also said that his government will be able to evacuate those 1 lakh 68 thousand foreigners declared by the foreign tribunals, except those who have pending cases in courts and stay orders. These cases will not be sent to FT; rather, the suspected citizen has to prove his citizenship before the District Commissioner (DC) within 10 days. If he/she fails to do so, evacuation orders will be passed by the DC.
