UP to install AI-based smart surveillance at Kashi, Ayodhya and Gorakhpur temples; Real-time crowd monitoring planned

The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department will introduce advanced AI-based surveillance systems at three of the state’s busiest and most revered religious destinations, Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur. According to reports, the initiative aligns with the state government’s broader strategy to modernise temple infrastructure through Smart Tourism and Digital Governance.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh described the project as “a new era of innovation in temple tourism,” emphasising that Uttar Pradesh aims to become a national benchmark for tech-enabled religious travel. “With AI technology, devotees will experience faith with comfort, safety, and efficiency,” he said.

Under the initiative, AI-powered high-resolution cameras will constantly track visitor footfall, analyse crowd density in real time, and issue alerts during peak rush hours or emergency situations. The system includes sophisticated tools such as facial recognition, behavioural analytics, and automated emergency response triggers to help authorities detect suspicious activities or potential safety hazards at the earliest.

Officials said the technology will not only boost security monitoring but also assist in improving crowd flow during festivals, special events, and daily aarti timings, moments when footfall surges dramatically. The system will further support temple management in maintaining cleanliness, monitoring facility usage, and enhancing the overall quality of amenities.

The implementing agency will be responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of the surveillance network. In addition, it will provide data-driven analytics dashboards to temple trusts and district administrations. These dashboards will enable real-time decision-making on crowd control, resource allocation, deployment of volunteers, and infrastructural planning.

This project is among the first large-scale applications of artificial intelligence in religious tourism in India, reflecting Uttar Pradesh’s growing focus on blending heritage with modern governance tools. Highlighting this fusion, Minister Singh remarked, “Uttar Pradesh is home to faith, heritage, and innovation and by embracing AI, we are redefining how people experience pilgrimage.”

The initiative is expected to significantly improve safety, efficiency, and the devotional environment for millions of visitors who converge at these spiritual sites throughout the year.
