A chilling case from West Bengal’s Kakdwip region has triggered outrage, political uproar, and sharp questions over alleged police inaction after the body of a 21-year-old first-year Hindu law student was recovered from inside the chamber of local lawyer Sheikh Monowar (or Manowar) Alam. The chamber, located in the Pratapaditya Gram Panchayat area under Kakdwip Police Station, became the scene of a suspected suicide late Thursday evening.
The case has swiftly snowballed into a political controversy after Union Minister of State for Education & Development and Balurghat MP Dr. Sukanta Majumdar posted images of the accused lawyer on X, alleging that Alam is a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and a close associate of Abhishek Banerjee. The Minister accused the West Bengal Police of shielding the accused because of his alleged proximity to the ruling party’s leadership.
According to local sources and family accounts, the young student who belonged to the Gandhinagar area of Kakdwip regularly visited Alam’s chamber for practical training as part of her law studies. The family claims the student had developed a close personal relationship with the lawyer, a factor now believed to be central to the circumstances leading to her death.
The girl left home on November 12, morning as usual, but by evening the family received devastating news: her body had been found hanging inside Alam’s chamber. Police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem.
A bag found at the location reportedly contained a handwritten letter, which the police initially believe to be a love letter. The family alleges the letter indicates a personal relationship between the lawyer and the student, and that rising tensions between them may have driven the girl to take the extreme step.
The most troubling part is the accused lawyer has been missing since the incident. Despite registering a case of unnatural death and launching search operations, the Kakdwip Police has not yet been able to trace Sheikh Monowar Alam. Police teams are reportedly conducting raids in Kakdwip and its adjoining areas, but without success.
Local residents are openly questioning the sincerity of the police efforts. Several allege that Alam, described as being “close to influential AITC leaders,” may be receiving protection.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, sharing multiple photos of the accused on X, called Alam a “Trinamool leader” and claimed he is “close to Abhishek Banerjee.” He accused the police of intentionally slowing down the investigation to protect the ruling party’s cadre.
According to media reports, the body of a first-year Hindu law student was found hanging today inside the chamber of a lawyer named Sheikh Monowar Alam, located in the Pratapaditya Gram Panchayat area under Kakdwip Police Station in South 24 Parganas.

Majumdar wrote that the West Bengal Police “is once again shielding the powerful,” and condemned what he termed “the collapse of law and order under the ruling establishment.”
Even more disturbing are the allegations emerging from local communities, who claim this is not an isolated case. Some sources suggest that the police’s hesitation may stem from the possibility that a full investigation could expose a broader network involved in the “systematic targeting of Hindu girls” across Kakdwip and nearby areas.
