Flights delay in Delhi airport due to technical glitch, passengers need not panic

FacebookTwitterWhatsAppTelegramEmail

On November 7, Indira Gandhi International Airport(IGI), New Delhi experienced a major technical glitch in its Automatic Message Switching System(AMSS) that helps to navigate the air traffic control data. As an impact, there were delays in the flight boarding and take-off. As per the sources, more than 100 flights were delayed. The Airport Authority of India(AAI) has issued an official statement and urged the passengers not to panic as the authorities are working to resolve the issue and restore the system at the earliest. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Technology has refuted the speculations of any cyber attack and has asserted that its a mere technical glitch which is being resolved.

“Flight operations at Delhi Airport are experiencing delays due to a technical issue in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which supports Air Traffic Control data. Controllers are processing flight plans manually, leading to some delays. Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all passengers and stakeholders”, asserted the AAI. The passengers are also requested to continuously communicate with their respective airlines for further updates pertaining to the flight timings and other key information.

Authorities were also trying to control and process the flight plans manually due to the breakdown in the AMSS, this was leading to flight delays. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is one of the busiest airports of the country that operates more than 1,500 flights everyday. Thus, several airlines including Indigo, SpiceJet, Air India have also issued travel advisory for their respective passengers and have asked to regularly check the respective websites for the latest updates on the revised flight schedule and other critical information.

“A technical issue with the ATC system in Delhi is impacting flight operations across all airlines, leading to delays and longer wait times at the airport and onboard aircraft. We regret the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption, which is beyond our control, and appreciate your patience. Our cabin crew and on-ground staff at the airport are extending immediate assistance to reduce passenger inconvenience”,  posted Air India on the X social media platform.

Breakdown of the AMSS means that all the automatically processed information has to be now manually fed to the system. This will cause delay in the flight boarding and take-off process. However, once the flight starts to navigate in the air, there will be no issue. For example, with the technical glitch, a flight plan that has to be submitted prior to operation has to be fed to the system manually instead of automatic interpretation and processing. Even the weather forecast that comes from all the meteorological stations of the country has to be inducted into the system manually, which is a time-consuming process, leading to flight delays.
