Guwahati: Nexus of radical Muslims promoting Islamic ideology exposed by police in NIT Silchar in Southern Assam. Assam police SIT is probing the nexus between Bangladeshi students and Muslim faculty members of the institution to promote radical Islamic ideology collecting foreign funds to construct a mosque and promoting religious activities inside the hostel.
The Special Investigation Team of Assam police investigated the serious matter for four days starting from October 20 inside the institute premise. SIT questioned 5 faculty members of the NIT Silchar allegedly linked with the radical network. The investigation began after some objectionable photographs of Bangladeshi students handing over cash to faculty members of the institute to construct a mosque surfaced in the social media. The activity is a complete violation of Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) of India.
The person in question is a Bangladeshi national namely Md. Mirajul Islam Sayem who was a student of NIT Silchar from 2020 to 2024. The student during his stay in the institution allegedly created a radical network to promote Islamic ideology amongst the Muslim students. Md. Mirajul hails from Khulna district of Bangladesh and was a student of NIT Silchar under Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship. Before leaving NIT Silchar Md. Mirajul handed over a huge amount of cash to five faculty members of the institute to carry forward the radical mission started by him.
The SIT questioned faculty members Dr. Abdul Karim Birbhuyan, Dr. Mukddis Ali Ahmed, Md. Ahmaru Zzaman, Dr. Monowar Hussain and office staff Musharaf Hussain Birbhuyan. SIT found that another faculty member Wasim Arif facilitated Namaz facility to the Muslim students inside hostel no 8 and also arranged Halal meat for the students.
The entire controversy erupted after 5 Bangladeshi students were suspended for violent activities and drug use. Following the incident Cachar police raided the hostels of the institute and questioned several Bangladeshi students. Seeing the sensitivity of the issue the case was handed over to SIT. It should be mentioned that Bangladeshi students come under ICCR scholarship to study in NIT Sinchar and on many occasions are involved in anti India activities. In August 2024, a female Bangladeshi student Maisha Mahjabin was deported from India after her involvement in anti-India activity. Another student named Sadat Hossain Alphi, was also seen posting anti-Indian posts just after completion of his course. Currently there are around 70 students studying in NIT Silchar under ICCR scholarship.
