Bengaluru: In a shocking escalation over a petty dispute involving firecrackers, the Hennuru police have arrested five individuals, including two minors, following a brutal attack with deadly weapons that left two victims injured. The incident, which began as a minor verbal argument, rapidly spiraled into violence, highlighting growing concerns over public safety in residential areas.

According to police sources, the complaint was lodged by Kiran, who was reportedly setting off firecrackers outside his home on the morning of October 19. As Kiran lit a firecracker, it accidentally touched a passing youth riding a motorcycle, sparking a verbal altercation. The initial disagreement seemed minor, but by the evening around 9 pm, the confrontation escalated dangerously.

Police reports reveal that the group of youths, identified as Ameen Sharif, Syed Arbaz, and Syed Khader, along with two other minors, returned with deadly weapons to settle the score. Witnesses stated that the group attacked Kiran using long sticks and other makeshift weapons, inflicting injuries. A friend of Kiran, Bharat, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted during the attack.

As the group continued their assault, alert local residents intervened and managed to restrain three of the attackers. Based on the information provided by witnesses, the Hoysala police arrived promptly at the scene and arrested all five individuals. The minors involved have been sent to a remand home, while the adults are in police custody awaiting further legal proceedings.

The police have registered a case under the Arms Act against the accused. Authorities are also investigating the origin of the  long machete used in the attack, as carrying such weapons in public spaces poses a serious threat to community safety.

Devaraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Division, emphasized the severity of the incident, stating, “The use of  lethal weapons  in public spaces not only endangers individuals but disrupts the peace of society. Due to the aggressive behavior displayed by these individuals, we are taking stringent action under relevant sections of the law to ensure accountability and public safety.”

The attack has sparked concern among local residents, who said the escalation could have been fatal if not for their timely intervention. Many have called for increased patrolling and awareness campaigns to prevent such incidents, especially during festival seasons when the use of firecrackers and gatherings in public spaces is common.

Police have urged residents to report any disputes or incidents involving potential weapons immediately to prevent them from escalating. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances behind the attack, including the planning involved and whether others may be implicated.
