The Festival of Lights: From self-illumination to social illumination

Deepotsav, the Festival of Lights, symbolises the journey from inner darkness to inner illumination. Its true essence lies in lighting the lamp of truth, compassion, and unity within ourselves, to light up society at large

Deepotsav, the festival of lights, is India’s most radiant celebration. Yet its essence lies not merely in lighting lamps, but in dispelling the darkness that resides within us- the darkness of selfishness, jealousy, and intolerance. When a person’s heart grows dim from within, even the brightest external light begins to fade. Therefore, the true message of Deepotsav is “ before illuminating the world, we must first remove the shadows from our own minds”. Only then will the world truly shine.

This festival reminds us that the real lamp is not the one we light outside, but the one we must kindle within i e. with the flame of truth, compassion, and service. The day every individual lights this inner lamp of sincerity and empathy, society itself will glow with collective brilliance. Indeed, the very foundation of Deepawali rests upon self-illumination leading to social illumination.

In Indian tradition, this festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness. It recalls that divine night when Bhagwan Rama returned to Ayodhya after years of exile-a moment when truth and righteousness triumphed over falsehood and evil. Since then, Deepawali has carried the timeless message that the path of light is the true path of humanity.

Today, when Indian society stands divided by caste, religion, language, and region- trapped in the shadows of mistrust and insensitivity, the relevance of Deepotsav becomes even greater. It is not merely a time to clean and decorate homes and shops, distribute sweets, or embrace loved ones; it is an opportunity to spread light in the lives of others. If we can bring a smile to the home of someone in need, give a poor or deprived child the chance to celebrate, offer support to someone in despair, or share happiness in an old-age home, only then does this festival attain its true meaning.

The light of Deepavali also teaches us that light knows no boundaries. It belongs to all and shines equally upon everyone. The sun itself teaches us that its radiance discriminates against none. Likewise, Deepotsav inspires us not to remain confined within our own joys, but to share in the joys and sorrows of others, to see our well-being in the well-being of all.

In the modern age, this festival also carries a crucial message i.e. responsibility toward the environment. When we light earthen lamps made from our own soil, use natural decorations crafted by local artisans, and celebrate with eco-friendly green fireworks, we express gratitude to nature and respect for our cultural heritage. A restrained, green, and indigenous Deepawali is indeed the truest reflection of our civilisation.

The light of this festival also reminds us that the real celebration begins when the human heart, bright within and without, kindles its inner flame with truth, service, and harmony. Only such illumination can bring lasting brightness to society. As the Upanishads proclaim “Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya”, i.e. Lead me from darkness to light.

Therefore, this Deepawali, let us illuminate not just our homes but also our hearts- for every true change begins within, and that inner illumination ultimately blossoms into the light that brightens the world.
