Kerala: RSS demands probe into Anandu’s death, suspects Islamist network behind edited suicide note to defame Sangh

Anandhu was under treatment for OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), a mental-health condition characterised by unwanted, recurring thoughts or urges (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviours (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions are often time-consuming; they cause significant distress and interfere with daily life

KOCHI: A fabricated allegation has been circulating on social media for the last couple of days. It concerns a suicide note posted on Instagram by a young techie. The letter alleges that he was sexually abused as a child by an RSS man over a long period. Immediately, anti-Sangh and anti-nationalist forces seized on the matter and began amplifying the claim because it was directed against the RSS.

The team Organiser made a thorough inquiry to ascertain the facts. Excerpts from this investigation follow:

Anandu Aji (26), who was found hanging in a lodge in Thiruvananthapuram, was the son of the late Ajimon of Vanchimala Chamakkalayil, Kottayam. Ajimon was an active taluk-level Sangh worker and was well known in the surrounding area. Anandu’s paternal uncle (his father’s elder brother) was an active RSS worker in the Manoli sakha. His mother taught at a school run by RSS swayamsevaks. Ajimon died in a motor accident on 13 April 2019 near Pala in Kottayam district. Everything was normal until then, but after that tragic accident affairs took a new turn. Anandu distanced himself completely from the Sangh.

In the meantime, Anandu’s sister reportedly fell victim to a love-Jihad relationship with a Muslim youth, Ansil, from Erattupetta, an area described by the report as a nerve centre for PFI extremists. This brought a sea change to the late Ajimon’s family life. Simultaneously, Anandu’s mother developed strained relations with the management of the school where she worked. Anandu struggled to cope with his father’s death.

Some observers smell a rat: Anandu had kept silent about the alleged sexual abuse for several years, published the allegation only recently, and then took his own life. He posted the account of sexual abuse on Instagram after keeping it secret for many years.

Anandu was under treatment for OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), a mental-health condition characterised by unwanted, recurring thoughts or urges (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviours (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions are often time-consuming; they cause significant distress and interfere with daily life.

There is, therefore, reason to suspect that orchestrated attempts by fundamentalist movements sought to exploit Anandu’s mental condition to level allegations against the RSS. This suspicion gains weight when one reads Anandu’s suicide note carefully. He wrote that, when he was three or four years old, an RSS-BJP worker called “NM” repeatedly sexually abused him. First, children of that age are not admitted to Sangh sakhas. Second, there is no RSS-BJP worker known as “NM” in that area. Moreover, when he was three or four years old his father Ajimon was very active in the sakha; therefore sexual abuse at that time appears highly unlikely. In other words, it would have been impossible for a man to have sexually abused that child without the family, who were closely associated with the Sangh, knowing the culprit’s identity.

Anandu claimed in his suicide note that he had revised the text several times before posting it on Instagram. Yet, such a carefully drafted note does not name the alleged culprit. That omission is suspicious and gives room to suspect a conspiracy. A prompt police inquiry could have resolved this quickly. Now, the allegation is being misused to tarnish the image of the RSS.

Even though the note was posted to Instagram by Anandu, there is reason to suspect that someone else exploited his OCD and posted the allegation on his behalf. OCD involves intrusive, repeated thoughts, images or urges, for example, excessive concern about cleanliness or security, repeated checking, or fears that someone is out to harm them. These sorts of thoughts and behaviours can adversely affect daily functioning. That is the clinical definition of OCD.

A reading of Anandu’s suicide note suggests that someone who lacks even the slightest knowledge of RSS terminology or practice misused Anandu or his social-media handles. There is reason to believe that Islamist fundamentalist organisations may have acted to malign the RSS.

Anandu had visited a relative’s house in Thiruvananthapuram the previous day and left as usual; his death therefore remains mysterious and requires inquiry. It should be investigated whether his Instagram account was misused and whether his poor mental health was exploited, contributing to his death.

Another significant issue raised in the report is the alleged shelter provided to the murderers of RSS-BJP leader Renjit Sreenivasan of Alappuzha district, who was murdered on 19 December 2021 at his residence in front of his mother and wife. The report suggests that the proximity of that shelter to Anandu’s home warrants investigation into possible anti-national links to his mysterious death.

RSS Dakshin Keralam Saha Pranth Karyavah has demanded a thorough and comprehensive inquiry in view of the dubious allegations levelled against the RSS and it has filed a petition in this regard before the Kottayam District Police Chief.

The unnatural death of Sri. Anandu Aji one of our Swayamsevaks from Elikkulam at Kottayam District is very much sad and unfortunate. Since several years his family is associated with Sangh. Anandu’s father Late Sri. Aji… pic.twitter.com/giwmWOZlLd

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sri Anandu Aji, a Swayamsevak from Elikkulam in Kottayam district, terming the incident “very sad and unfortunate.”

In an official statement issued by RSS Dakshina Keralam, the organisation said that Anandu’s family had been associated with the Sangh for several years. “Anandu’s father, Late Sri Aji, was a Karyakartha of the Sangh. At this sad and unfortunate moment, we firmly stand with the family and pray to the Almighty to give solace to Anandu’s soul,” the statement read.

The RSS Kottayam unit has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Anandu’s unnatural death and the suicide note that appeared on Instagram and other social media platforms soon after his demise. The note allegedly contained “dubious and baseless allegations against the Sangh,” which Anandu is said to have cited as reasons for his suicide.

Calling for an impartial probe, Sreekumar stated, “We are of the firm opinion that an independent inquiry will not only bring out the real cause of his unnatural death but also ensure the innocence of the RSS in this unfortunate incident.”

RSS Kottayam has already filed a written petition with the District Police seeking a thorough and fair inquiry into the matter. The organisation maintains that transparency and truth are essential to dispel any false narratives surrounding the death.
