The United States administration has apparently issued a clarification regarding the sale of additional AMRAAM missiles to Pakistan. The statement asserts that the US is not selling any new AMRAAM missiles to Islamabad. Instead, the latest agreement stresses only on the maintenance of the missiles and the process of supporting with the spare parts.
In a separate statement, the United States Embassy in India also issued a clarification. It affirmed that the renewed contract between USA and Pakistan is aimed at only sustainment and spare parts rendition for the existing missiles and the agreement doesn’t cover the supply of any new missiles. The US Embassy said, “Department of War’s September 30 announcement referred to an amendment to an existing Foreign Military Sales contract for sustainment and spares for several countries, including Pakistan. Contrary to false media reports, no part of this referenced contract modification is for deliveries of new AMRAAMs to Pakistan and does not include an upgrade to any of Pakistan’s current capabilities”.

Earlier various media reports, including the popular media houses of Pakistan claimed that the update of the contract by the Department of war of the United States was targeted towards selling new missiles to Pakistan. However, the US War Department has refuted these reports as false. On the other hand, the latest upgradation of the Foreign Military Sales Contract is not exclusive to Pakistan but is intended towards various countries such as United Kingdom, Germany, Israel, Australia, Qatar, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Saudi Arabia etc. The current upgraded contract will persist till 2030 and intends to render maintenance service and supporting with the spare parts for the missiles.
AMRAAM stands for AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile. It is an American beyond visual range, air-to-air missile. Over the years, Pakistan had purchased nearly 700 AMRAAM missiles from the US for its F-16 fleet. Pakistan’s procurement of the AMRAAM indeed marks one of the largest international orders for the missile from the US. The reports of US supplying new AMRAAM missiles to Pakistan had triggered an alert call in India, especially in the wake of the recent conflict in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and also in the backdrop of the spiking US-Pakistan relations, post the Operation Sindoor.
