Raipur: In a tragic development, a tribal boy sustained serious injuries after being struck by a pressure Improvised Explosive Device [IED] planted by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district.
The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon in Pidia area under the jurisdiction of Gangloor police station limits.
The boy was administered primary treatment and then subsequently taken to Bijapur district hospital where he is currently being treated.
The security personnel after the incident have launched a search operation in the vicinity of the blast site to trace for more such pressure IEDs.

It must be noted that this is not the first time that such an explosion has struck a minor in the tribal-dominated areas marred by Naxal-insurgency, and scores of similar IED explosions, injuring civilians have been reported in the past as well.
The incident underscores the grave threat posed by the IEDs planted by Naxals on forest’s trails to stop the movement of security forces deep inside the forests, though the same has led to death or grave injury to scores of civilians who have accidently stepped upon these pressure devices.
It is worth mentioning here that the tribal community is heavily depended upon the forest produce for their livelihood and to fulfill their other daily requirements. Significantly scores of such explosion have occurred when the local villagers were on their way to pluck Tendu Patta leaves and accidently came in contact with the IEDs.
Security forces have amplified counter-insurgency operations in Abujhmad and other adjoining regions affected by red terror. The operations conducted in recent months have led to notable successes foe security forces against the unlawful Maoist outfit, scores of whose members are laying down weapons and re-integrating with the mainstream.
Earlier on Wednesday, as many as16 Maoists turned themselves and surrender before the officials in Narayanpur districts, citing disappointment with the Naxal’s ideology.
Those who laid down weapons were members of Maad division and were carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 48 lakhs as announced by the state.
Reacting to the surrender, Chhattisgarh Deputy CM Vijay Sharma said “The surrender and rehabilitation policy of the government and sensitive, humane efforts like Poona Margem [An initiative launched by the government to encourage Maoist to surrender arms] from Rehabilitation to Rebirth have installed new confidence in the minds of those who had once strayed onto the path of violence due to misconception.”
Significantly, the Union Government has announced to eliminate Maoist-insurgency from Bharat by March next year.
