Raipur: Chhattisgarh deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma on September 29, reiterated that while the government is willing to welcome Maoists who wants to lay down weapons and surrender, there is no such ceasefire.
Sharma’s remark has arrived on the heels of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement who in a program on Sunday stated that there is no need for a ceasefire if you [Maoists] want to surrender, the police would not fire a single bullet.
Echoing Shah’s view, deputy CM Sharma who also oversee the state’s Home Ministry said that this is our stated policy and the same has been reiterated, there is no ceasefire as this is not a war.
Sharma urged the Maoists to surrender arms, promising that the government will welcome such move. Pointing out the letters written by the Maoist group Sharma said that if the Maoists truly wants to stop the cycle of violence in Bastar they should decide quickly and come forward to lay down weapons.
The letter written by the Maoists intend to end bloodbath in Bastar, so I want to tell them they should decide quickly and come forward, the government will welcome them on a red carpet, said Sharma while addressing top Maoist leaders.
This come after Union Home Minister on Sunday reiterated that the government is committed to wipe out armed Maoist insurgency by March next year.
Addressing a gathering in New Delhi, the Union Minister stated that the letter written for a ceasefire was misleading. “Recently, to spread confusion, a letter was written stating that what has happened so far has been a mistake, that a ceasefire should be declared, and that we want to surrender. There will be no ceasefire. If you want to surrender, there’s no need for a ceasefire. Lay down your weapons. The police won’t fire a single bullet,” said the Union Home Minister.

“And as soon as the letter arrived, everyone started jumping. All these leftist parties had publicly shied away from leftist violence. But as soon as Operation Black Forest happened, their petty sympathies were exposed. They wrote letters and press notes demanding that Operation Black Forest be immediately stopped. The CPI and CPI(M) did. Why do they need to protect them…why don’t NGOs come forward to protect human rights of victim tribals? Have all the people who write these lengthy articles and advise us ever written an article for the tribal victims? Why are they not concerned about this? Why is your sympathy and empathy so selective?” questioned Shah.
The Union Home Minister made these remarks weeks after back to back letters from Maoists surfaced in the media. The letters, one of which mentioned about the outlawed group’s willingness to surrender arms and halt the alleged movement, follows back to back letters opposing the surrender offer, indicating a serious rift within the banned group.
According to a recent release by Union Government, as many as 18 districts remained affected by Maoist-insurgency at present, a sharp decline from hundred plus Maoist-affected districts in 2015.
