The Interim Government of Nepal on September 28, freezed the passport of the Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four other officials, who were ousted from power as an impact of a violent Gen Z protest. The Nepal Home Ministry has asserted that the passports were freezed as the Oli government attempted to suppress the Gen Z protest in a merciless and violent way in early September.
The Home Ministry took the move to freeze the passports based on the recommendations of the judicial commission that is investigating the atrocities committed by the Oli government to suppress the protest. When police unleashed massive firing and live ammunitions on the young protestors in and around the federal parliament building of Nepal, nearly 19 youth succumbed to death.
People facing passport freeze include, Ramesh Lekhak, the former Home Minister of Nepal, Gokarna Mani Duwadi, the then Home Secretary, Hutaraj Thapa, the Chief of the National Investigation Department and Chhabi Rijal, former Chief District Officer of Kathmandu. As per the statement issued by the judicial commission, the aforementioned four officials along with KP Sharma Oli, whose passport has been freezed, cannot leave the country. They also cannot move anywhere out of the Kathmandu Valley. Gauri Bahadur Karki, former judge and member of the judicial commission asserted that the decision to freeze the passport has been taken in order to ensure transparency and accountability in the inquiry process that is underway.

The case under investigation by the judicial commission, is among the high profile and extremely sensitive cases of Nepal, as it led to the death of nineteen youth and hundreds of others injured. Thus, it is pivotal to inquire every stakeholder involved in the atrocities and in that direction, the former apex authorities of the country are expected to adhere to the rules and appear for the investigation.
Former PM Oli denies allegations of fleeing the country
As the Interim Government freezed the passport, former PM KP Sharma Oli denied the rumours of fleeing the country. He also accused the current interim government for undertaking extreme and unnecessary steps against him. He also vowed to continue his political fight with the intention of restoring “peace, good governance and constitutional order” in the country.

KP Sharma Oli also alleged that the interim government led by Sushila Karki lacked legitimacy and came to power through “vandalism and arson”, who is unable to ensure the security of the country in the current situation. Meanwhile, the Gen Z led a violent uprising against the KP Sharma Oli government due to rampant corruption, unemployment problem and other issues.
The CPM-UML, the political party of KP Sharma Oli objected the freezing of passport during a party secretariat meeting and quoted the action as a “political revenge”. Meanwhile, thee families of the deceased and other victims called for stringent legal action who were responsible for the violent crackdown and death of the youth.
