Aizawl: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13 inaugurated a new railway line and flagged off three train services for Mizoram, thereby placing Aizawl firmly on the Indian railway map. The inauguration, initially planned as an in-person event, was conducted virtually from Lengpui Airport after bad weather prevented his helicopter from flying to the main venue at Thuampui.

The PM, who arrived in Lengpui this morning, was received by Home Minister K. Sapdanga and other dignitaries. From the airport, he virtually launched the Aizawl–Delhi Rajdhani Express (to Anand Vihar Terminal), the Aizawl–Kolkata Express, and the Aizawl–Guwahati Express.

Expressing regret at not being able to reach Aizawl, Modi praised the people of Mizoram, noting their long tradition of self-sacrifice for the welfare of others. He invoked the legacy of historic figures such as Lalnu Ropuiliani and Pasaltha Khuangchera as enduring examples of the Mizo spirit of tlawmngaihna—selflessness and service.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Mizoram in India’s development journey,” the Prime Minister said, declaring that Aizawl would now hold a permanent place on the country’s railway map.

He emphasised that the new rail connectivity would provide a major boost to employment, tourism, transport, and hospitality in the state. He also underlined Mizoram’s potential to serve as an economic corridor for the Northeast, expressing confidence that the new infrastructure would usher in transformative development.

In addition to the rail projects, Modi laid foundation stones for six other major infrastructure initiatives in Mizoram. Together with the railway works, the total investment in projects inaugurated and launched today exceeds Rs 9,000 crore.

The main inaugural ceremony at Lammual in Aizawl was attended by Mizoram Governor Gen. V.K. Singh, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chief Minister Lalduhoma, and other dignitaries.
