As a landmark step under the Government of India’s Local for Vocal initiative, Dhamtari district in Chhattisgarh has launched a unique eco-friendly firecracker manufacturing unit that is empowering nearly 200 women. The factory, which has received certification from the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), marks the first such license for green crackers in Bharat, combining livelihood creation with environmental sustainability.

Dhamtari Collector Abinash Mishra, while highlighting the significance of the initiative, said, “Under Local for Vocal, we have started a project in which we are manufacturing green crackers. These are 100 per cent environmentally friendly… This is the first time in India that a license has been received for green crackers. Around 200 women are working here, and it is becoming a very good role model for livelihood, environmental safety, and sustainable development.”

According to officials, a total of 24 women’s self-help groups (SHGs) are involved in this pioneering initiative. Many women, previously unemployed or dependent, now find themselves financially self-reliant. One of the workers, speaking to media, said, “Thanks to this initiative, several women are now able to support themselves. This will not harm the environment either.”
The green crackers project not only ensures reduced emissions and minimal environmental impact but also sets a precedent for integrating women’s empowerment with sustainable development goals. This move is expected to encourage other states to replicate similar models, especially as Diwali approaches and concerns over pollution mount.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district—home to Sivakasi, India’s largest hub of firecracker production manufacturers are focusing on innovation and variety to attract customers during the festive season. New designs include jungle-themed crackers packed in lion, wolf, and tiger-shaped boxes, along with food-themed products such as pizza and watermelon fireworks. Fireworks inspired by cartoons, games, and music are also being introduced to appeal to children.
A local seller, Usha Nandini, said, “Every year, new varieties of fireworks are produced in Sivakasi. This year, fireworks shaped like children’s favourite foods and popular cartoon characters have been made for kids. Everyone is buying fireworks for children, and this year’s products are selling very well.”

Earlier in July, over 200 firecracker factories in Virudhunagar were forced to remain shut for nine days following inspections ordered by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in the wake of repeated explosions and safety lapses. The units reopened on July 23 after warnings that licenses could be revoked if operations continued to remain suspended.
