Russia and Ukraine have further escalated decisive fighting and massive retaliatory attacks, thus picturizing the truce and peace efforts as more difficult than imagined by the US President Donald Trump. Russia on September 7, in a wave of overnight strike set ablaze the administrative building of Kiev. As an impact, the roof of the government building ruptured and massive fire broke out.
The latest Russian strikes on Kiev, are said to be one of the large-scale and serious escalations in the three-year old war and for the first time Russia has attacked the power centre of Ukraine by striking the cabinet headquarters in the Pecherskyi district of Kiev. Russian drone and missile strikes led to the death of three people including an infant and 18 others were injured. Residential blocks in the vicinity were also hit and thick black smoke encompassed the entire locality.
“For the first time, the Government building, roof and upper floors have been damaged due to an enemy attack”, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said. The latest escalation comes just few days after Russia launched a massive overnight drone strike on Ukraine leading to the devastation of Kiev’s public infrastructure and injuring many.
Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky exclaimed that Russia attacked Kiev with 800 drones and 13 missiles. “Since last night, work has been ongoing to eliminate the consequences of Russian strikes – more than 800 drones, 13 missiles, including 4 ballistic. According to preliminary information, several drones crossed the border of Ukraine and Belarus”, Zelensky wrote on the X social media platform. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, quoted the Russian strikes as “serious escalation”.

In Sviatoshynskyi, the western district of Kiev several floors of a nine-storied building were severely damaged. Another 16-storied building and two other nine storied building were also set ablaze. Further, Central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk was also attacked in Russian strikes. There were power cut in many regions for several hours and transport & other key public infrastructure were also damaged in Kryvyi Reh, which is the hometown of Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukraine retaliates: Hits Russian oil pipeline
Within hours of Russian attack on Ukraine, Kiev retaliated by launching counterstrikes at the Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline. According to Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, Ukraine attack on Russian energy facilities led to “comprehensive fire damage”. The Druzbha oil pipeline in Bryansk city of Russia is a strategic oil supply channel to Hungary and Slovakia, the countries who are dependent on Russian oil supply.
With spiraling conflict, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko urged the country’s western allies to respond and aid to Kiev with accurate actions and not just mere words and promises. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister also appealed to allies to support with stronger air defense systems.
The soaring Russia-Ukraine conflict doesn’t reflect any sign of fulfilling the ambitions of US President Donald Trump. Be it bringing both the Russian and Ukrainian Presidents’ to the negotiating table, striking a deal that is acceptable to both the sides or ultimately accomplishing the personal geopolitical and hegemonic ambitions, which is to be ‘global peacemaker’ and seizing the Noble Peace Prize. Apparently, reality is far beyond the comprehension and ambitions of the US President.
