J&K Hazratbal Emblem Row: Complaint against Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti over justification, blasphemous words

New Delhi/Srinagar, 6 September 2025: Supreme Court Advocate Vineet Jindal has lodged a formal complaint against Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP President and former CM Mehbooba Mufti, accusing them of justifying the vandalism of the National Emblem at Hazratbal Shrine in Srinagar.

In his complaint addressed to the Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, Jindal, who also serves as President of the International Hindu Seva Sangh, alleged that both Abdullah and Mufti made objectionable public remarks undermining the sanctity of the Ashoka Emblem. He cited interviews and statements where Omar Abdullah dismissed the installation of the Emblem at Hazratbal as an “error,” while Mehbooba Mufti claimed it had “hurt religious sentiments.”

Jindal demanded registration of an FIR under the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act, 2005 and sections 111, 153, 297, 324, and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The complaint argues that their remarks legitimised vandalism and insult to a national symbol, amounting to an act against the spirit of nationalism.

The controversy follows September 5 incident at Hazratbal Dargah, where a mob vandalised the Ashoka Emblem after a National Conference leader allegedly referred to it as “idol worship.” The incident has sparked outrage across the Valley and beyond, with strong demands for legal action.
