Awami League, the political party of the ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheik Hasina staged protest in the capital city of Dhaka, despite facing a ban from the interim government of Bangladesh. The political party was banned in May, 2025 by the Yunus government as per the ‘Anti-terrorism Act’ of the country and the party is labeled as a ‘terrorist organisation’.
Despite restrictions on political activities, the Awami League organized the rally in the capital city just five days after their last program. On September 5, around 2 p.m., under the banner of Dhaka North City, thousands of leaders and activists of the Awami League brought out a procession from Nabisco in Tejgaon and marched towards the Tibet area.

Party sources also said that this was the largest rally and protest by the Awami League since the political upheaval of August 5, 2024, when Prime Minister Sheik Hasina was removed from power in a dramatic escalation, led by the students’ movement. Awami League leaders also claimed the massive turnout in the protest as a testament for the fact that the people still stand firmly with the pro-Liberation forces such as the Awami League.
The protesters echoed the slogans such as “Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Hasina”, “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” and “Remove Yunus, Save the country”. Despite police trying to detain the Protesters, massive rally went ahead and marched in full swing and fervour. One of the protestor asserted, “Even if we stay at home, there is no chance of survival. This illegal government is harassing Awami League leaders and activists, including our party chief Sheikh Hasina, through false cases. That is why we took part in the rally today”. Apart from the massive rally in Dhaka, members of the Awami League reportedly held protests in Dhanmondi as well.
Along with being labelled as a terrorist organisation, Awami League is also banned from contesting the elections. The country is set to hold the elections in February 2026, the maiden election since the ouster of Sheik Hasina in August 2024, and the interim government took charge of the country with Muhammad Yunus as its Chief Advisor.
With Awami League unable to contest in the election, Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP), largest political coalition of the country, is said to win the elections without much competition and opposite camps. Sheik Hasina was denounced from power in August, 2024, as an impact of the massive students’ protest over alleged discrimination of the government in the job quota system.
Meanwhile, Interim Government of Muhammad Yunus has also unveiled ‘July Declaration’, a set of proposed constitutional reforms, marking one year of the ouster of Hasina government. On the other hand, the interim government of Bangladesh is also increasing its affiliation with Islamabad, which was absent since the Liberation of East Pakistan from West Pakistan in 1971. This alliance acts against the interests of India, as Pakistan can use Bangladeshi soil for fraudulent anti-India activities. In August, 2025, The International Crimes Tribunal(ICT) of Bangladesh has begun trails against the deposed Prime Minister Sheik Hasina.
However, even after deposing Sheikh Hasina, global human rights group claim that there is no significant improvement in Bangladesh with respect to law and order situation or humanitarian concerns. Also, the rift between Bangladesh Military and Interim government is spiking, a major concern regarding the growth and political stability of the country.
