Kerala: Congress woes continue as sexual allegations mount against youth wing leader Rahul Mankoottathil

The girl alleged that Rahul was behaving with other girls also in the same manner. Her friend has the same experience too. He always says, “I don’t care”. There are people in Congress to help him. She added that Rahul and companions are born criminals too

Rahul Mankoottathil, who resigned as Youth Congress state president on August 21 in the midst of sexual scandals, faces another scandal. This time it is from a girl who has been allegedly betrayed by the Youth Congress leader. She alleges that he made her consume some medicines and had sexual intercourse after promising to marry her. And, he went back on his words. She says that he took her to a place saying that he had to tell her something and he had physical relation by force.

The girl said that she met Rahul first in 2023. The chat started on Instagram. Later on, he collected her Telegram number. He had an excuse to say: he had admins to handle Instagram and they would see the messages. Thereafter, he started to send messages on Telegram. She alleged that he was sending messages to various girls by setting the timer. He used to send her messages and phone calls three times a day. Later on, when she met him, his friend Feni Nainan was with him. They selected the place. Then he said people would see them, hence a room was ideal. There he forced her into a physical relation, assuring that he would marry her. But immediately after that he said to her that he would not marry her; if she insists, he would commit suicide.

At that time, he did not have pills with him. Next day, he gave her pills by force despite her saying that she had medicine allergy.

If she wept in this regard, he would shout stating that he had not gone anywhere and there was no need of hue and cry. Later on, he would pamper and tame her. The girl alleged that Rahul was behaving with other girls also in the same manner. Her friend has the same experience too. He always says, “I don’t care”. There are people in Congress to help him. She added that Rahul and companions are born criminals too.

Organiser had reported earlier about this complaint which was too serious to ignore. It referred to a voice chat which some Malayalam channels aired on August 21. It was about Rahul compelling a woman to terminate pregnancy. Adv. Shinto Sebastian has filed a complaint, in this regard, before the Ernakulam Central Police Station and the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR), stating that the forced abortion of pregnancy is the violation of a child’s right to live.

Latest news suggests that so far more than ten girls have come out with sexual complaints against Rahul Mankoottil. According to media reports, two of them are the daughters of a former Congress MP and a former Congress MLA. General secretary and vice president of the Ernakulam district committee of Youth Congress have expressed their utter contempt towards Rahul. They say that female workers, known to about 70% of the workers of Youth Congress and KSU (Kerala chapter of NSUI, student wing of Congress), are unhappy about Rahul’s behaviour. Some of them left the organisation due to the same reason. Both leaders expressed this in the party WhatsApp group.

Meanwhile, there are reports of Rahul’s voice chat shouting at a woman for not agreeing to terminate pregnancy. He says, it will jeopardise his political career. He was reportedly threatening to kill her. He said, one minute was enough to finish her off.

Protests of BJP are still shaking the Congress throughout the state. Mahila Morcha workers are carrying out various sorts of protests throughout the state. In Thrissur, they protested in front of the statue of late K. Karunakaran, the former chief minister. There they demonstrated a cradle as a slight suggestion to the alleged pregnancy of a girlfriend of Rahul. They alleged that all Congress offices need cradles! Their demonstrations are demanding Rahul’s resignation as MLA.

Interestingly, Rahul Mankoottathil had convened a press meet, on August 23, at his ancestral house in Pathanamthitta. Everyone waited for the news of his resignation as MLA. But, it was cancelled. Still, some Congress leaders say that there is no need of resignation. They say that since there is no police case, FIR or any other sort of legal action against him, Rahul does not have to resign.

But now, Kerala Women’s Commission has initiated suo motu case against Rahul Mankoottathil. Bharatiya Mahila Morcha has filed complaints before the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and Kerala Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

Before his resignation, Rini Ann George, Malayalam actress and former journalist, hinted on August 20 that a young MLA had harassed her with unsolicited messages and even invited her to a hotel, dismissing her warnings with “who cares?”. She did not name him but many suspected Rahul. She said senior Congress leaders, including Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan, were aware but did nothing. Satheesan even trivialised her complaint, questioning whether anyone could be “hanged” based on a chat. Rini has since faced cyberattacks, which she believes were orchestrated by Rahul’s supporters.

On August 21, Avanthika, a transgender person from Kochi, alleged that Rahul repeatedly called her, inviting her to hotels and even saying he wanted to rape her. Another woman from the UAE accused him of defaming her by twisting a casual Instagram exchange. A complaint has also surfaced from the daughter of a former Congress MP, who claims Rahul reneged on marriage citing caste.

The backlash has intensified. In Palakkad, Mahila Morcha workers marched with live cocks, symbolising Rahul’s “sexual hunger”, demanding his resignation. Yuva Morcha workers marched to the Leader of the Opposition’s residence, accusing Satheesan of shielding him. Even CPM-affiliated SFI and DYFI have demanded his resignation.

Rahul’s troubles are also internal. Many Youth Congress and KSU leaders are now openly speaking out against him. Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of the late K. Karunakaran, alleged that several Congress households had similar complaints about Rahul’s misbehaviour.

When Rahul was elected Youth Congress president, protests erupted over alleged fake voter ID cards linked to him. That case is still remembered. Today, far from being a rising star, he has become a liability to his own party.

Now, all eyes are on the Home Ministry under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to see whether legal action will follow against Rahul Mankoottathil, a Congress MLA at the centre of charges of harassment, assault, defamation, and forced abortion, a scandal that challenges the Congress’s claimed respect for women.
