On August 18, police arrested four individuals for the rape of a 14-year-old girl who is deaf and mute. The incident took place in the Ratabari area of Sribhumi district in Assam. The accused have been identified as Islamuddin, Monir Uddin, Dilawar Hussain, and one minor.
On August 16, a 14-year-old girl with speech and hearing disabilities was on her way to her uncle’s house to celebrate Janmashtami, accompanied by her younger brother. The young girl was forcibly taken and gang-raped by a group of men, including Islamuddin. The men pushed the victim’s younger brother to the ground before forcing her into an autorickshaw, where the assault occurred.
The girl’s brother ran home to inform their parents about the incident. A search was immediately launched, and the victim was found lying unconscious by the roadside, reportedly for nearly three hours.
The girl was later taken to the hospital for medical treatment. SSP (Sribhumi) Parha Pratim Das stated, “The survivor, a 14-year-old speech and hearing-impaired girl, was assaulted inside an autorickshaw.”
Islamuddin, Monir Uddin, Dilawar Hussain, and one minor were arrested and charged under the POCSO Act. The minor was presented before a Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a shelter home. The three adults were brought before a local court and remanded to police custody for three days.
