Until now, translation services in the Lok Sabha were available in 18 regional languages apart from Hindi and English, including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
With the latest expansion, Kashmiri, Konkani, and Santhali have been added to the system, thereby ensuring complete coverage of all scheduled languages recognized under the Constitution. “This step will make parliamentary debates and discussions more participatory and inclusive, enabling elected representatives to express themselves in their mother tongue without barriers,” Birla said.
The move has been hailed as a historic achievement for linguistic diversity, reflecting India’s constitutional commitment to preserving and promoting all scheduled languages while ensuring that every representative has equal opportunity to engage in the democratic process.
