During his campaign against alleged “vote theft” or vote chori, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi singled out Gurkirat Singh Dang as a case of duplicate voter IDs in Delhi. Gandhi claimed Dang had four voter IDs and voted four times in different booths within the same constituency.
“Here is a duplicate voter. There are 11,965 voters of this type. This is a gentleman called Gurkirat Singh Dang. Gurkirat Singh Dang appears once, twice, three times, four times in four different polling booths. The same name, the same address, the same person,” Gandhi said, alleging that such anomalies were widespread.

The allegations were made during a press conference highlighting irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of Bihar Assembly elections. Gandhi claimed the Election Commission acted in collusion with the BJP to manipulate voter data.
Responding to Gandhi’s allegations, Gurkirat Singh Dang came forward to clarify the situation. His sister, Kanandeep Kaur Dang, accused Gandhi of breaching privacy and spreading misinformation.
Dang explained in a video that the four voter IDs were created due to administrative errors during EPIC issuance and had been cancelled according to Election Commission procedures.
“I challenge Rahul Gandhi to prove that I voted four times. These IDs were mistakenly created, but I had applied for their cancellation. My family is being harassed, and I will take legal action against those defaming me,” Dang stated.

The BJP reacted strongly, accusing Rahul Gandhi of spreading lies. Amit Malviya, BJP IT Cell chief, said: “Gurkirat Singh Dang, whom Rahul Gandhi had singled out during his presentation, has hit back and demanded proof. This is yet another example of how Congress spreads misinformation.”

Malviya further added, “Every claim Rahul Gandhi has made collapses under scrutiny. This is not the first instance, Rahul Gandhi is an industrial-scale liar,” reflecting the party’s stance on the controversy.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has asked Rahul Gandhi to either submit a formal affidavit supporting his allegations or apologise to the nation. Gandhi, however, has refused, asserting that he is relying on EC data.
The Commission reiterated that voter roll revisions under SIR were conducted transparently, and allegations of “vote theft” are politically motivated.
The controversy over Gurkirat Singh Dang has added fuel to the ongoing political battle in Bihar, where the Congress-led INDIA bloc has launched the Voter Adhikar Yatra to highlight alleged electoral irregularities.
