Atal Bihari Vajpayee, born on December 25, 1924, remains one of India’s most respected leaders, remembered for his statesmanship, oratory, and forward-looking vision. A founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vajpayee played a pivotal role in shaping modern Indian politics and governance.
Vajpayee served as India’s tenth Prime Minister, first briefly in 1996 and later from 1998 to 2004. His tenure witnessed several historic milestones:
- Pokhran-II nuclear tests (1998): Establishing India as a nuclear power on the global stage.
- Golden Quadrilateral project: Expanding national highways and strengthening India’s infrastructure.
- Peace initiatives with Pakistan: Attempting to build lasting ties with the neighbouring country, including the Lahore bus journey.
For his outstanding service to the nation, Vajpayee was conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2015. He passed away on August 16, 2018, but continues to inspire generations with his vision for a self-reliant, developed India rooted in democratic values and cultural pride.
