Independence Day 2025: PM Modi begins address from Red Fort, highlighting ‘Naya Bharat’ vision

India marked its 79th Independence Day with grandeur and patriotic zeal as Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the Tricolour at the Red Fort and addressed the nation. This year’s theme, ‘Naya Bharat,’ envisions a prosperous, secure, and self-reliant India by 2047

India celebrates its 79th Independence Day today with unmatched patriotic fervour, marking 78 years since the country’s freedom from over two centuries of British colonial rule. From the historic Red Fort in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the National Flag and addressed the nation, setting the tone for the day’s celebrations.

Earlier in the morning, PM Modi took to his official X handle to extend greetings to the citizens, writing:
“Wishing everyone a very happy Independence Day. May this day inspire us to keep working even harder to realise the dreams of our freedom fighters and build a Viksit Bharat. Jai Hind!”

This year’s celebrations revolve around the theme ‘Naya Bharat’, announced by the Ministry of Defence, encapsulating India’s long-term vision of becoming a prosperous, safe, and self-reliant nation by 2047, the centenary of independence. The theme resonates with the government’s push for economic growth, national security, and social harmony.

In keeping with tradition, PM Modi was assisted in hoisting the Tricolour by Flying Officer Rashika Sharma. The Red Fort grounds hosted nearly 5,000 special guests, representing diverse sections of Indian society, from tribal children from Andaman & Nicobar Islands to winners of international sporting events and 50 outstanding Swachhta workers recognised for their contributions to cleanliness drives. Members of the Indian contingent for the Special Olympics 2025 were also among the invitees.

The Indian Air Force, the coordinating service for the event, presented a ceremonial Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a special aerial flypast. In a unique tribute, aircraft carried both the National Flag and the Operation Sindoor flag, adding symbolic weight to the day’s proceedings.

President Droupadi Murmu, in her fourth Independence Day eve address, had called upon the nation to strengthen democratic values and work collectively towards national progress. Her words set the tone for the celebrations, which were marked by unity, pride, and renewed determination.
