Tensions gripped Padohiya village in Bahraich district after the temple of local deity Gavat Mata was vandalised in the intervening night of August 10 and 11. The attackers damaged the idol, felled four neem trees surrounding the sacred site, and inverted a Hanuman flag, actions that locals described as a deliberate assault on their faith.
According to police, the vandalism was discovered early Monday (August 11) morning, sparking outrage among villagers who quickly gathered at the spot. Witnesses said the sight of the desecrated idol and fallen trees deeply angered residents, who considered the shrine a centuries-old spiritual anchor of the community.
Local BJP MLA Sureshwar Singh visited the site and condemned the act, calling it “a calculated attempt to hurt the sentiments of Sanatan Dharma followers.” He told reporters, “It is clear that this incident was aimed at hurting our faith. I have informed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and senior officials. Despite strict directions from the CM, some people are still not refraining from attacking Sanatan.”
Singh also criticised what he called a “mentality problem,” alleging that even with proper roads, processions were deliberately routed through sensitive areas, creating friction.
He said, “despite the village having a road, Tazia processions are taken through the fields…The chief minister is very sensitive in such cases and has been taking strict action. Despite the strict directions of the chief minister, the mentality of some people is not changing. These people are not refraining from attacking Sanatan. Imagine what these people will do if there is ever any (political) change”
Circle Officer Ravi Khokhar confirmed that a case has been filed under Section 298 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (hurting religious sentiments) and the Uttar Pradesh Religious Protection Act. He said, “Six individuals have been taken into custody for questioning. The situation is currently peaceful.”
In response to the heightened tension, Bahraich police deployed additional forces, including Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel, to maintain order. Authorities have also been conducting foot patrols in and around the village to prevent any retaliatory incidents.
