Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 11, inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII Multi-Storey Flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh (BKS) Marg, New Delhi, marking a major milestone in sustainable and inclusive infrastructure for lawmakers. The project, designed with cutting-edge construction technology and eco-friendly features, addresses the acute shortage of MP housing in the national capital.

The event was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal, and Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

The new MP residential complex is fully self-sufficient, equipped with modern amenities catering to both residential and official functions. Built in compliance with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016 and meeting the GRIHA 3-star rating standards, it integrates green technologies to ensure energy conservation, renewable energy generation, and efficient waste management.

From an engineering standpoint, the use of monolithic concrete with aluminium shuttering allowed for faster construction without compromising structural durability. Safety standards have been prioritised, with all buildings constructed to be earthquake-resistant in accordance with modern design norms.

The complex is also Divyangjan-friendly, underscoring a strong commitment to accessibility and inclusive design. Each Type-VII flat offers spacious layouts that accommodate MPs’ residential needs while providing separate areas for offices, staff quarters, and a community centre to support public engagement and legislative responsibilities.

A robust security system has been installed to ensure the safety of residents. The project’s vertical housing model optimises limited land resources in central Delhi, reducing maintenance costs while providing proximity to Parliament House a key locational advantage for MPs.

Officials noted that the development was driven by the necessity to overcome the persistent shortage of suitable accommodation for MPs in the capital. The project reflects a broader push towards vertical, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient housing solutions in high-demand government zones.
