In a major breakthrough, police in West Bengal’s Barrackpore Commissionerate uncovered a large cache of illegal weapons and ammunition from a residential flat in Khardaha’s Regent Park area early Monday, August 4. The Detective Department conducted the raid following a tip-off.
The flat belongs to 66-year-old Madhusudan Mukherjee, son of Bhim Mukherjee, who was arrested on the spot. Another man, Liton, was also taken in for questioning. Both are currently under interrogation as authorities seek to unravel the case further.
The search revealed a staggering haul of 15 firearms, including a pump-action gun, a bolt-action rifle, two double-barrel rifles, one single-barrel rifle, a 9mm pistol, two 7mm pistols, three revolvers, and three single-shot guns. Additionally, police seized seven empty magazines for 7mm pistols, nine for 9mm pistols, and 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
Beyond the weapons, authorities confiscated Rs 1.48 lakh in cash, 248 grams of gold, 30 grams of silver, and approximately 10.7 kilograms of antique coins. The valuable items have raised suspicions of involvement in smuggling or black-market activities. Police are investigating potential links to a larger financial or criminal network.
Preliminary investigations indicate that many of the weapons were manufactured in Purulia district, West Bengal, and brought in through an arms dealer from Munger, Bihar. Information obtained from the arms supplier led police to Madhusudan’s flat and the subsequent raid.
A case under the Arms Act has been registered at Rahara Police Station (Case No. 219/25). Police plan to present Madhusudan before the court soon and seek custody for further questioning.
