National Investigation Agency (NIA) has charge-sheeted three Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) terror operatives in a conspiracy to propagate the banned terrorist outfit’s ideology and raise funds from foreign and other sources for promoting its activities. They allegedly sought support from the Pakistan Army to enforce the constitution written by HuT founder Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani in Bharat.

In a tweet on August 1, the NIA said: “Kabeer Aliyar @ Kabeer Ahmed, Aziz Ahmed @ Jaleel Aziz Ahmed, and Bava Bahrudeen @ Mannai Bava have been charged under relevant sections of the IPC and the UA(P) Act, 1967 in case RC-01/2024/NIA/CHE.”

The NIA said that the accused entered into a criminal conspiracy with HuT office-bearers to establish an Islamic Caliphate in Bharat by seeking military assistance from forces inimical to the country and enforcing the constitution written by HuT’s founder Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani. The probe revealed the trio had also planned to secure support from the Pakistan Army through Haj and Umrah travellers.

The NIA said in a statement: “The accused were engaged in recruiting vulnerable youth into the secret bayaan classes of HuT and were radicalised into the ideology, which was banned, along with all its manifestations and front organisations, by the Government of India in October last year. The charge-sheeted accused had also organised an exhibition showcasing the military might of Islamic nations like Iran, Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan, with the intention of inviting them to overthrow the lawfully established Government of India through violent jihad and war.”

The NIA is continuing with its probe in the case.

In another case, on July 23, the NIA charge-sheeted the key perpetrator in the ISIS Tamil Nadu radicalisation case. In a post on X, it said the accused, A. Alfasith, hailing from Mayiladuthurai, has been charge-sheeted under Sections 153A and 505 of the IPC and Sections 13 and 39 of the UA(P) Act before the NIA Special Court in Poonamallee, near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

It said: “Alfasith was closely associated with radicalised Islamists and die-hard supporters of ISIS, including Mohammed Ashik and Sathik Batcha, who were involved in several terror-related cases in Tamil Nadu.”

The NIA, during its probe, found sufficient evidence establishing that Alfasith and his associates circulated incriminating ISIS-related videos, documents and images through social media platforms, targeting hundreds of young Muslim boys. It said: “They had created several WhatsApp and Telegram groups such as ‘Islamic State’ and ‘Black Flag Soldiers’ to promote unlawful activities threatening the unity, security, and communal harmony of the country. Their agenda was to spread ISIS ideology and radicalise vulnerable youth.”

In case RC-03/2024/NIA/CHE, the NIA probe further revealed that Alfasith followed the activities of the global terrorist group ISIS and had downloaded incriminating videos and documents from the ISIS-operated Telegram channel ‘nashida33’ (Al Wala Wal Bara).

In January this year, NIA officials from Kerala arrested 26-year-old Alfasith, hailing from Thirumullaivasal (a coastal village) in Mayiladuthurai district, in Chennai for his alleged links to the banned ISIS terror organisation. The agency busted an ISIS module active on Tamil Nadu soil under the very nose of the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate, which is located just a kilometre away from where he was working.

According to a user named Scarlet Heart on X, “Alfasith, a private ambulance driver in Chennai, was arrested for recruiting individuals for ISIS. He was actively recruiting for ISIS, brainwashing youngsters and college students through WhatsApp. NIA is also set to investigate students and youngsters who were part of the WhatsApp group used for ISIS recruitment and radicalisation.”
