Muhammed Shahid, a madrasa teacher from Siddique Nagar in Kannur district surrendered before the Taliparambu court after being accused of sexually abusing a 8-year girl. The Taliparambu police had registered a case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to the complaint, the abuse occurred inside a madrasa classroom around 8 a.m. a few days ago. The minor also revealed that a similar incident had taken place earlier.
Following the girl’s statement, police initiated legal proceedings and registered a case under the POCSO Act. Shahid subsequently appeared in court and surrendered as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police have stated that further steps, including detailed inquiry and evidence collection, are underway.
This incident has once again brought attention to the need for stronger oversight and child protection mechanisms in all educational and religious institutions, including madrasas, many of which operate informally or without regular monitoring. Child rights activists have reiterated the importance of background checks, grievance redressal systems, and strict enforcement of POCSO guidelines to ensure the safety of minors in all learning environments.
