A 14-year-old kanwariya was killed and several others injured in a tragic accident on Friday (July 25) afternoon when a tractor-trolley ran over a group of resting devotees in the Ujhani area of Budaun, Uttar Pradesh. The incident triggered a violent clash between two groups of pilgrims and led to the torching of the vehicle involved in the mishap.

According to officials, the deceased has been identified as Ankit, a native of Bareilly district, who was participating in the annual Kanwar Yatra. Around 3 pm, Ankit and his fellow kanwariyas had stopped on the roadside to rest after collecting holy water from Kachla Ghat and were seated beside their own tractor-trolley.

While the group was resting, another tractor-trolley carrying kanwariyas accidentally ran over them. Ankit died on the spot, and several others sustained injuries, confirmed Circle Officer Devendra Singh, as quoted by PTI.

Violence Erupts After Accident

The tragic incident sparked outrage among Ankit’s group. In a fit of anger, they assaulted the driver of the other tractor-trolley, identified as Lalla Babu, and set the vehicle ablaze. The tensions quickly escalated as a roadblock was staged, creating traffic snarls and panic in the area.

During the scuffle between the two groups, several individuals were injured, police confirmed. Authorities had to act swiftly to control the situation and prevent further escalation.

Police and Fire Brigade Respond Promptly

Law enforcement personnel arrived promptly at the scene and managed to pacify the agitated crowd. The roadblock was cleared after officials assured the group of action against the accused. Simultaneously, the fire brigade reached the spot and doused the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles or property.

“The driver responsible for the accident, Lalla Babu, has been detained, and the body has been sent for post-mortem,” added CO Devendra Singh. The injured devotees are being treated, and further investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

Annual Yatra Marred by Tragedy

The Kanwar Yatra, one of the largest religious pilgrimages in northern India, witnesses millions of devotees travelling by foot and vehicles to fetch water from sacred rivers. While the event is known for its spirit of devotion and discipline, such tragic incidents raise concerns over road safety, traffic coordination, and pilgrim fatigue.
