Harshvardhan Jain has been arrested by the UP ATS for operating a fake embassy from Ghaziabad’s Kavi Nagar, right in the heart of the National Capital Region, without raising any suspicion.

For seven years, Harshvardhan Jain maintained the illusion of a functioning embassy from a lavish bungalow in Ghaziabad, complete with luxury cars like an Audi and Mercedes bearing diplomatic number plates — all without arousing suspicion.

Claiming to represent the unrecognised micronation of West Arctica, Jain also posed as the consul or ambassador of fictitious entities such as Saborga, Poulvia, and Lodonia. His elaborate deception came to an end on Tuesday when the Uttar Pradesh Police Special Task Force exposed the fake setup and arrested him.

Who is Harshvardhan Jain?

Harshvardhan Jain is an MBA graduate from the London College of Applied Science and ITS College in Ghaziabad, according to sources. He hails from a business family in Ghaziabad that once owned marble mines in Rajasthan. However, following his father’s death and subsequent financial difficulties, Jain reportedly came into contact with controversial godman Chandraswami, who helped him relocate to London, where he went on to establish several companies.

According to investigative agencies, Jain used these companies to conceal unaccounted wealth, as reported by sources. The probe also revealed his alleged connections with international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi.

Jain returned to Ghaziabad only after the death of godman Chandraswami and went on to establish the fake embassy, using it to defraud unsuspecting individuals. To bolster his image and gain trust, he allegedly morphed photos of himself with prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

This isn’t Jain’s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2011, he was found in possession of illegal satellite phones, leading to a case being registered against him at the Kavi Nagar police station in Ghaziabad, according to ADG (Law & Order) Amitabh Yash.

Why was Jain running a fake embassy?

Behind the façade of the fake embassy was an alleged operation involving job fraud and a hawala network. According to police, Jain used the setup to broker overseas job deals for companies and individuals, while also running a hawala racket through a network of shell companies.

According to sources, Jain’s racket also involved falsely promising individuals and businesses overseas job placements, only to defraud them. Posing as a diplomat, he allegedly used his fake identity to gain trust and lure victims with bogus employment and trade opportunities.

What was recovered during the raid?

During Harshvardhan Jain’s arrest in Ghaziabad’s Kavi Nagar area, the Uttar Pradesh STF’s Noida unit recovered a trove of suspicious items likely linked to his alleged hawala operations. The seizure included over Rs 44 lakh in cash, foreign currency from multiple countries, four luxury vehicles with diplomatic number plates, 18 additional diplomatic plates, and 12 diplomatic passports from so-called micronations. Forged documents and other incriminating materials were also found at the scene.

Police also seized forged documents bearing the seal of the Ministry of External Affairs, two fake PAN cards, 34 counterfeit stamps belonging to various countries and companies, two bogus press cards, and paperwork linked to multiple businesses.
