A few women who had converted to Islam through Chhangur Baba said on July 14 that they are now receiving threats after returning to Hinduism.
According to reports, one of the women said, “Abu Ansari introduced himself to me as Amit, and his family posed as Hindus. I first met Chhangur Baba in 2019. The environment was unsettling, with only women present, many of whom had been brainwashed. Chhangur is believed to have conducted around 5,000 religious conversions.”
Gopal Rai, international president of the Vishva Hindu Raksha Parishad, stated that the women who recently reconverted to Hinduism have been receiving death threats via social media and even through speed post letters.
On July 5, Uttar Pradesh Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested the alleged mastermind of a religious conversion racket, along with his associate.
Jalaluddin, also known as Chhangur Baba, and Neetu alias Nasreen, are residents of Madhpur in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district. Authorities said a non-bailable warrant had been issued against Jalaluddin, and a cash reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for information leading to his arrest.
One of the women involved in the case stated that those who were converted did not receive any money. Another woman said she was forced to marry a Muslim man after her conversion, adding, “They wanted to make India an Islamic country by 2047.”
Gopal Rai, international president of the Vishva Hindu Raksha Parishad, claimed that when he went to file a complaint at Gomti Nagar Police Station, he was ignored. He has since demanded security for himself and those who have returned to Hinduism. Rai added that the reconversions took place under the VHP’s ‘Ghar Wapsi’ programme on July 3.
According to officials, Jalaluddin’s son Mehboob and another associate, Naveen alias Jamaluddin, were part of an organised network allegedly involved in converting Hindus and other non-Muslims to Islam. Last Wednesday, illegal structures linked to Chhangur Baba were demolished.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the actions of the accused “anti-social” and “anti-national.”
