Assam government has deported 330 illegal Bangladeshi intruders in May 2025 for the state; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the state assembly on June 9. He said the pushback will be further intensified. CM Sarma further said that the Supreme Court earlier, in its judgment on clause 6A of the ‘Assam Accord’ said that the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Order, 1950’ is valid and the government can evict illegal intruders under the act without going to the foreigner’s tribunal. Moreover, another bench of the Supreme Court has directed the state government to deport 30000 declared foreigners by the tribunals. But most of these people have vanished, and the police are in search of them.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma further mentioned that the Supreme Court, in its judgment, mentioned that the state government doesn’t need to refer the NRC for the deportation of illegal foreigners. Besides that, the district commissioner can evict illegal foreigners directly without approaching the foreigner’s tribunal under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Order, 1950. The CM also informed the assembly that, following the Supreme Court’s judgment, the state government will expedite the deportation process for foreigners in the state. Who has entered Assam after March 24, 1971 is an illegal intruder and he or she will be deported under the law of the land by the government, CM Sarma reiterated. He also said that the Assam government has some reservations regarding the updated NRC in Assam.

The state government feels that many doubtful people had managed to include their names in the NRC by various illegal means, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the state assembly on June 9. He said that many had registered their names in the NRC, taking advantage of similar names in different parts of the state. Moreover, declared foreigners by Tribunals also managed to include their names in the NRC by illegal means. The state government has already submitted its affidavit to the supreme court, and it is also in consultation with the central government regarding the anomalies that took place during the NRC update process in Assam, the CM said. It should be mentioned that the opposition Congress, AIUDF and left parties have strongly objected the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi intruders and said that the state government is misusing the loopholes of the existing act and supreme court judgments.
