Jihadi acts under guise of mental insanity: Somewhere there is an attempt to rape, somewhere temples are being targeted

The alarming trend of "Jihadi acts under the guise of mental insanity" suggests a calculated strategy to obfuscate the true nature of extremist violence, where perpetrators attempt to evade accountability by feigning psychological distress

After committing a crime, the criminal is not a criminal, but an accused, until the court pronounces the sentence and we all know that this punishment is based on the evidence presented before the court. If the evidence is weak or someone has made preparations to escape the plan, then often in such cases the criminals commit the crime openly and never get punished. There are not one but many examples of the extent to which the Jihadi mentality is increasing in India, but no one would have thought that even citing mental insanity, there are many people from a particular class in the country who will continue to escape even after committing a crime.

Actually, this figure is very shocking, if we look at it from the year 2023 itself, many incidents have happened across the country, in which all the perpetrators are Muslims and all the victims are followers of Hindu Sanatan Dharma. In which, in all these cases, concession was sought from the court by saying that the accused is mentally deranged, so he did it unknowingly. But at the same time the question also arises that why every time, in every incident, the target were the followers of Hindu Sanatan Dharma and their centers of faith? The work they did to desecrate temples and insult Hindus, did they do such incidents with any mosque, dargah or people of their community? Here, on searching for the answer, it is found that they did not do even one such incident among their community, because no mention of it was ever found to come to the fore.

So far this year, four major incidents have come to light in this matter. A video of Kerala’s Guruvayur temple went viral on social media on 15 January 2025. In the video, Abdul Hakim is shown plucking hair from his thigh and putting it on a Tulsi plant. As soon as the video surfaced, there was widespread outrage on social media. After this, a complaint was lodged by Hindu nationalist organization Hindu Aikya Vedi in Kerala, after which Hakim could be arrested. Then the police claimed that the accused is mentally unstable and along with this the police also issued a warning on Facebook that strict legal action will be taken against those who share the video related to this incident and post related to it. While it should be noted here that this is not the first incident of accused Abdul Hakim. Hakim has already been accused of selling stale and spoiled food. He is also accused of installing hidden cameras in the toilets of his hotel, a complaint was also lodged in Guruvayur police station about this. Earlier, he has also been accused of pelting stones on buses carrying Ayyappa devotees. But every time it is left off in the name of mental patient.

Another similar case came to light on March 7 this year in Baruipur city (West Bengal) of South 24 Parganas where the accused Sheikh Indu broke the idols of Maa Sheetla and set the temple on fire. When the pictures of the burnt idols and the damaged temple went viral on social media, the local people caught Sheikh Indu, but the Baruipur police claimed that he was mentally ill and then he was released.

After March, in May 2025, in an incident reported from Pune, Maharashtra, a Muslim youth broke the idol in the temple and even urinated on it. When Hindu organizations put pressure for police action in this regard, the family declared him mentally ill and the action that should have been taken against the accused Chand Sheikh was not taken. The whole matter was that on May 2, 2025, in Nageshwar temple located in Paud village of Pune district of Maharashtra, a Muslim youth, Chand Sheikh, took down the idol of Goddess Annapurna from the temple and broke it and then urinated on the idol.

After this incident, tension spread in the area. After being caught by the police, the family members of the accused claimed that Chand Sheikh is mentally ill.

In a similar incident that came to light from Bokaro in Jharkhand state, Abdul was described as mentally ill by his uncle. If we look at the details of this incident, it is revealed that Abdul, who works as a shuttering (welder), tried to molest and rape Mahavir Murmu’s wife who was bathing in a pond in Kadrukhutha village of Bokaro. The villagers caught him with great difficulty and handed him over to the police after beating him. However, he later died in Bokaro Thermal Hospital. In this rape incident, the police instead took the victim’s family members into custody. At the same time, Abdul’s uncle Mohammad Kalimuddin filed an FIR and described Abdul as mentally ill. Now the situation is that there is talk of giving compensation of Rs 4 lakh, a house and a government job to one member of the family to the family of the accused of rape. While most of the members of the victim’s family are in jail, some are out on bail.

The same thing happened in the incident of 23 September 2024. Sher Khan beat up Arun Chaudhary, the priest of Shri Ram Temple under Thana Raya Kaswa of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. He threw bricks and stones in the temple. In this regard, the priest said that in the morning, Sher Khan, a miscreant from a particular community, had reached there. He was threatening not to open the temple, then started throwing bricks and stones in the temple. When he was opposed, he ran away from there while beating. When its video went viral on social media, anger was seen among the local people as well as Hindu organizations. The case was registered under pressure, but after this the accused Sher Khan was declared mentally deranged.

The second incident in this episode came to light from Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh, where Shamsad, a youth of a particular community, spat paan masala on the idols installed in the Devi temple near the main intersection in Sadarpur town. The accused also threatened to kill the people around while misbehaving with them. The police arrested the accused on 20 October. Then the then acting SHO Dilip Singh told that Shamsad is ‘mentally ill’. At the same time, in November 2024 this year, Fatima Khan was detained from Ulhasnagar in Thane area of Mumbai, Maharashtra, on charges of threatening to kill Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Later the police described the woman as mentally unstable.

Earlier in Madhya Pradesh, on 1 December 2023, a Muslim man Latif Khan urinated on Hindu temples located at Ramghat in Mahakal police station area of Ujjain. A devotee who came here from Delhi told that when he was walking with his family on the banks of Ramghat, Latif Khan was urinating on small Hindu temples built on Ramghat. When the devotee stopped him from doing so, he did not listen. Later he was caught with the help of some workers of Hindu organizations. But later the police declared him mentally ill.

An incident is of 4 November 2023. In Murshidabad district of West Bengal, the police arrested Muslim youth Ara Sheikh for urinating in public near the Shivalinga in Kandar village of Salar block. This shameful incident was captured on camera and went viral on social media. In the video, it can be seen that the man enters the temple in anger and urinates inside the temple. Murshidabad Police said that the accused Ara Sheikh is a mentally unstable person. The whole episode took place on 31 October. Another similar incident came to light on October 12 in the same month from Harrawala in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. On October 13, the police arrested a man named Saddam for desecrating a Hindu temple in the city. In the CCTV footage, the miscreant is seen urinating and throwing stones outside the temple. The incident took place at night and the devotees came to know about it in the morning when they saw the glass of the windows broken. The crime was revealed after checking the CCTV footage. Police said that the accused is mentally deranged.

In the same year 2023, on April 22, Mohammad Moiuddin is caught in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. On the day of Eid, this Moiuddin enters the temple wearing slippers and then urinates in the temple. The incident is of Hanuman temple located at Kalyani Chowk of Nagar police station in Muzaffarpur. During this, when the priest tried to stop this Mohammad Moiuddin, he also beat up the priest. After this, he stood in front of the statue of Goddess Maa with his pyjamas open. Later, the young man went to a nearby temple and urinated. People say that during such a disgusting act, he was also raising religious slogans. But Bihar Police called Moiuddin mentally deranged, after which Bihar Police had to face criticism from the people.

If we look at it, these are not the only incidents that have happened across the country, there have been many similar incidents that have happened year after year, in which Hindu faith has been hurt and every time the accused, who belonged to a particular community, has been called a mental patient. When many cases were investigated in depth, like in 2022, Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh was attacked by Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi, who had planned a big targeted attack. He too was earlier called a mental patient. Samajwadi Party had openly come out in his support. Even Akhilesh Yadav had made statements saying that Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi has a mental problem. But when the security agencies seriously investigated this entire episode, it was revealed that the accused is influenced by banned Islamic preacher Zakir Naik and has links with ISIS. He was also found to have terrorist connections in Syria.

In fact, what happened outside the Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur could be thoroughly investigated (as everyone thinks) because this temple and the area itself is associated with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath. But in other areas, where an attempt has been made to absolve the crime by calling the criminal a mental patient, it has been seen that it is not a special area like Yogi Adityanath, that anyone should consider it so seriously. But crime is crime, what difference should it make whether it is someone’s special area or not.

The truth is that every time targeting Hindu places of worship shows that there are more such mentally ill people within a particular community who are only looking for ways to attack Hindu temples and insult Hinduism. These mentally ill people have no influence on the places of worship of other religions. In such a situation, what should happen now is that a thorough investigation of all the accused of such crime should be done so that the real truth can come out whether they are mentally ill or are pretending, just like in the Gorakhpur incident. Along with this, the strictest punishment under the legal process should be given to such criminals as soon as possible, so that it becomes a lesson for others so that such criminals cannot find a way to escape from their crime in the court by pretending to be mentally ill.
