Guwahati: In an escalating political showdown, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a fierce attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging links to Pakistan, questionable citizenship status within his family, and financial connections to a Pakistan-based NGO. The explosive claims, made during an interaction with reporters, have drawn sharp responses from Gogoi, who accused the Chief Minister of indulging in personal vendettas to deflect from pressing issues affecting the people of Assam.
CM Sarma alleged that Gaurav Gogoi had undertaken a 15-day visit to Pakistan—calling into question the purpose of the trip and labelling the neighbouring country a “terror hub” with “no tourist attractions like Kaziranga or Manas.” He further claimed that Gogoi’s wife had travelled to Pakistan 19 times and suggested she may be receiving a salary from a foreign-funded NGO operating out of Pakistan. The Chief Minister also alleged that Gogoi’s children might not hold Indian citizenship and questioned whether the Congress MP had altered their citizenship status without public disclosure.
“Gaurav Gogoi is not above the law. He is a criminal in my eyes. If we can arrest others for praising Pakistan, why not him? He must answer where he went, why he was there for 15 days, and what business his wife has travelling to Pakistan so frequently,” Sarma stated, adding that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Assam is already examining the matter.
The Chief Minister insisted that he possesses “evidence” related to the alleged foreign salary and citizenship concerns and vowed to expose the truth, whether or not Gogoi chooses to respond publicly.
The controversy began earlier this week when CM Sarma posed a series of questions to Gogoi on social media regarding his alleged foreign travel and financial links. The political exchange has now turned into one of the most heated face-offs in Assam’s current electoral season, with both leaders doubling down on their positions.
As the matter draws national attention, it remains to be seen whether the Assam government will proceed with legal or investigative action, or if the war of words will continue to dominate the political narrative in the days ahead.
