Maharashtra observed its 65th Maharashtra Day on May 1, with statewide celebrations and solemn remembrance of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, which led to the formation of the state in 1960.
The day commemorates the establishment of Maharashtra following the Bombay Reorganisation Act, which bifurcated the erstwhile Bombay State into Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking citizens.
From flag hoisting ceremonies and parades to cultural performances across government offices, schools, and public squares, the day was marked by both pride in cultural identity and homage to those who fought for statehood.
The Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, which witnessed mass agitations, sacrifices, and even martyrdoms, was at the heart of the commemorations. Citizens and leaders alike paid tribute to the movement that gave birth to a state rich in culture, language, and heritage.
Highlighting the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X to greet the people of Maharashtra. “Greetings on Maharashtra Day. The state has always played a vital role in India’s development. When one thinks of Maharashtra, its glorious history and the courage of the people come to our mind. The state remains a strong pillar of progress and at the same time has remained connected to its roots. My best wishes for the state’s progress,” he posted.

Maharashtra Day is more than a public holiday. It’s a celebration of Marathi language and identity, of the bravery and resilience that shaped the state, and of the milestones it continues to achieve. From Mumbai’s economic engine to Pune’s educational hubs and Nagpur’s political nerve centre, Maharashtra remains a key contributor to India’s economic, cultural, and political fabric.
