Guwahati: The Assam government is preparing for a major crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi migrants and individuals promoting anti-India sentiments in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this on April 27. CM Sarma revealed that a comprehensive plan is being formulated to detect illegal Bangladeshi nationals who have settled in Assam over the past few years without undergoing the mandatory National Register of Citizens (NRC) verification. “Thousands of intruders have managed to obtain Aadhaar cards without participating in the NRC process. This is completely illegal, and we have now stopped this practice,” the Chief Minister asserted.

He further announced that action would also be initiated against those who previously secured Aadhaar cards by circumventing the NRC, signalling a fresh wave of investigations and enforcement operations across the state.

Crackdown on anti-national activities

In a parallel crackdown, Assam Police have arrested 17 individuals from different districts for allegedly making anti-India and seditious comments following the Pahalgam terror attack that shook the nation earlier this week.

“There are no similarities between Bharat and Pakistan. The two are enemy nations, and we must maintain that stance,” , speaking at the state BJP headquarters on Saturday, he outlined his government’s aggressive approach to tackling both issues.

He sternly warned that anyone seen supporting Pakistan or promoting anti-national narratives would face strict legal action, including possible charges under the National Security Act (NSA).

Among those arrested is Bimal Mahato, a district-level leader of the Congress party from Udalguri. Mahato was apprehended for a controversial social media post in which he labeled the Pahalgam terror attack as a “BJP-sponsored political drama.” His remarks attracted widespread condemnation and led to swift police action.

List of arrested individuals

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Jabir Hussain (Hailakandi)
  • A.K. Baharuddin (Silchar)
  • Javed Majumdar (Silchar)
  • Mazahar Mia alias Mujihirul Islam (Morigaon)
  • Aminul Islam (Nagaon)
  • Sahil Ali (Sivasagar)
  • Zarif Ali alias Sharif Singh (Barpeta)
  • Anil Baniya (Bishwanath)
  • Mustak Ahmed alias Sahil (Sribhumi)
  • Bakhtar Hussain Borbhuya (Cachar)
  • Imran Hussain Borbhuyan (Cachar)
  • Bimal Mahato (Udalguri)
  • Dimple Baruah (Guwahati)
  • Maksidul Alam (Hojai)
  • Suman Majumdar (Hailakandi)
  • Masud Azahar (Nagaon)
  • Tahib Ali (Tamulpur)

Police sources indicated that these individuals were arrested for posting seditious content, promoting communal hatred, and supporting narratives sympathetic to Pakistan or terrorist activities. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and more arrests could follow. State police are monitoring social media platforms closely to identify and take action against any further attempts to disturb public peace and national integrity.

The Assam government’s twin-pronged approach — targeting illegal migration and cracking down on anti-national elements — signals a tough stance on issues of national security and internal stability ahead of the upcoming political season.
