Violence broke out in Malda’s English Bazaar on April 23 following the murder of a 25-year-old youth, prompting widespread protests and a massive police response. The unrest led to blocked roads, injured residents, and several detentions as villagers demanded justice.
The region of English Bazaar in West Bengal’s Malda district turned into a flashpoint of public anger after the killing of Nimai Mandal, a local youth, in the early hours of April 22. In response to a rise in criminal incidents in Sekendarpur village, residents had recently organised a night patrol system, taking turns safeguarding the area.
On the night of the incident, Nimai, along with Surya Mandal, Akash Gupta, and Biswajit Rabidas, was on duty. At around 1:30 am, the group noticed a few unknown individuals behaving suspiciously. When they approached and questioned the strangers, the men responded with violence, attacking the group with sharp weapons. The commotion alerted nearby villagers, who rushed to the scene, forcing the attackers to flee.
Emergency services were called, and the injured were rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital. Tragically, Nimai Mandal was declared dead on arrival. Surya Mandal suffered injuries and was admitted for treatment, while Akash Gupta was discharged after receiving first aid. The community was left shocked and enraged by the unprovoked assault.
By morning, anger had spilled onto the streets. Hundreds of villagers gathered and blocked the Malda-Manikchak State Highway in protest. The blockade continued for hours, effectively halting vehicular movement and affecting daily life in the region. Some agitators reportedly turned violent, attacking motorists attempting to cross the blockade.
As law enforcement arrived to restore order, the situation escalated further. Protesters began pelting stones at the police personnel, leading to a tense standoff. At around 11 am, after five hours of impasse, the police resorted to a lathi-charge and used tear gas to disperse the mob. The road was eventually cleared, and several protestors were taken into custody.
Speaking on the matter, Malda Superintendent of Police Pradeep Yadav confirmed that 18 individuals had been detained for questioning in connection with both the murder and the subsequent attack on the police. He added that authorities were reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators involved in the fatal attack on the youth.
Police patrolling has since been intensified across the region, particularly in Sekendarpur and surrounding areas, to prevent any further flare-ups. The local administration has appealed for calm, urging residents to cooperate with investigators and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
The incident has left the community shaken, with many demanding stricter security measures and quicker investigations. The tragic loss of a young life, combined with rising lawlessness, has once again spotlighted the need for enhanced rural policing and community safety mechanisms.
