Tensions flared in Sanodha village of Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district on April 19 after a Hindu woman reportedly eloped with a Muslim man just a day before her wedding, triggering communal violence in the area. The incident, which villagers are calling a case of “love jihad,” led to widespread unrest, with mobs setting fire to houses and shops and damaging property belonging to members of the Muslim community.

According to local sources, the woman was scheduled to be married on April 19. Guests had already arrived, and wedding preparations were in full swing. However, on Friday morning, the bride’s sudden disappearance sent shockwaves through her family. When relatives began searching for her, they discovered that a local Muslim youth was also missing, leading to suspicions that the two had eloped.

Anger and outrage soon spread across the village. By Saturday morning, mobs had taken to the streets, targeting homes, shops, and vehicles belonging to the other community. Visuals from the area showed plumes of smoke rising from torched structures and streets littered with broken glass and debris.

To bring the situation under control, the local administration deployed heavy police forces. Tear gas shells were fired, and mild force was used to disperse the mob. Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police Vikas Shahwal, Additional SP Lokesh Sinha, and SDOP Prakash Mishra, rushed to the scene to assess the damage and oversee security arrangements.

“We are on high alert. The situation is under control now. Peace is being maintained with the help of deployed forces, and investigations are underway,” SP Shahwal told the press.

The incident has drawn sharp political reactions. Naryavalli MLA Pradeep Lariya claimed this was not an isolated case. “This is the fifth such incident in Sanodha. On April 18, I had already warned the administration and demanded immediate action. But only a missing complaint was filed,” Lariya said, criticising the administration for not taking proactive steps.

He alleged that earlier warnings by local leaders about such incidents were ignored, allowing tensions to simmer over time. “We had warned that these cases could disrupt peace, but no seriousness was shown,” the MLA added.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president VD Sharma also weighed in strongly. “Those who indulge in love jihad and mislead daughters by hiding their identity will not be spared. Strict action will be taken,” he stated. However, he urged the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course, reiterating that communal harmony must be maintained.

While police maintain that the situation is now under control, the atmosphere in Sanodha remains tense. Locals fear further retaliation, and additional police companies have been stationed in and around the village as a precautionary measure.

No casualties have been reported yet, but authorities have launched an investigation into the violence and the alleged elopement. FIRs are expected to be filed in connection with arson and rioting, while efforts are being made to trace the missing couple.
