In a shocking incident during the Rongali Bihu celebrations, banned beef was allegedly found inside the premises of the Bhairav Mandir in Dutta village, Nilambazar, Sribhumi district of Assam. The discovery has triggered widespread outrage among locals and raised concerns over attempts to disturb communal harmony. One person, identified as Fakhruddin, has been arrested in connection with the case.

The incident took place on April 15, when local residents noticed pieces of suspected beef scattered within the sacred grounds of the Bhairav Mandir. Disturbed by the discovery, they immediately informed the Nilambazar police. A team arrived at the scene and began a preliminary investigation.
Suspect Identified and Arrested

During the search, police recovered an Aadhaar card and a PAN card from the Mandir premises, leading them to a suspect identified as Fakhruddin. He was detained shortly after and is currently being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the act. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.

The local community responded with strong emotions. Devotees and villagers, deeply hurt by the incident, promptly cleansed the Mandir premises by washing it with water as part of a purification ritual. Community members believe the act was a deliberate attempt by miscreants to disrupt peace during the Hindu festival of Bihu.

Police Appeal for Peace

Given the sensitive nature of the incident, law enforcement agencies and community leaders have appealed to the public to maintain calm and not fall prey to provocation. “We are treating the case with utmost seriousness and request everyone to allow the law to take its course,” a police official stated.

Beef Sale Banned in Assam

It is important to note that the sale of beef is banned in Assam. As per state regulations, beef cannot be sold or served in restaurants, hotels, public gatherings, or religious places. The government has maintained strict enforcement, especially in areas with mixed religious populations, to avoid potential communal tension.

This is not the first time the issue of beef has stirred controversy in Assam. During Ramzan, reports emerged from Baghmara in Barpeta district, where horse meat was allegedly sold as beef. Police arrested three individuals in that case and rescued six horses that were brought in for slaughter.
