Kolkata: BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya on April 15 alleged that the demography of all bordering areas in West Bengal has changed, blaming the Trinamool Congress for welcoming back those who once left India and called it “napaak.”

Speaking to ANI, Bhattacharya claimed that Rohingyas and Bangladeshi immigrants are being allowed into the state, bringing “jihadi ideas” with them. Highlighting concerns across border districts and recalling the 1946 Calcutta killings, he said the Mamata Banerjee government has taken the state back to those troubling times.

“Demography of all bordering areas has been changed. Those who left India and called it ‘napaak’, TMC is welcoming them back for its vote bank. Rohingyas are being welcomed in West Bengal. With the arrival of Bangladeshi immigrants, Jihadi ideas have also reached the state. A minister from TMC is openly validating what is happening in the state and has gone on to say that Hindus are only migrating within the state… The situation is equally worrisome in all border districts and a little less in the interiors of the state, but such a problem exists throughout the state nevertheless,” he said.

“Where we are sitting right now, this place was covered in blood back in 1946, the great Calcutta killing began from here. Mamata Banerjee’s government has taken us back to that time,” the BJP MP said.

The violence in Murshidabad was sparked by protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, which has been a contentious issue in the region. The protests turned violent, resulting in the deaths of three people, injuries to several others, and widespread property damage.

The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of supporting the protests and criticised TMC MP Bapi Halder for making threatening remarks against those protesting Waqf properties.
On Monday, the West Bengal police said that the situation in the violence-hit areas of Murshidabad was normal and urged people not to believe any rumours.

Speaking over the current situation, ADG, South Bengal Police, Supratim Sarkar said, “The situation is normal now. Everyone is safe. The CRPF, state police, and joint forces are deployed. The DGP of West Bengal police himself was present at the Samsherganj police station. We request everyone not to go through rumours. We opened a control room. Anyone facing any issue can contact us at any time.” (With inputs from ANI)
